Jonas Valanciunas is a Lithuanian professional basketball player who plays for the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA. Known for his fundamentally sound post-up skills and commanding presence as a solid big man, Valanciunas has carved a prominent niche for himself in the NBA.

Hailing from the scenic town of Utena, Lithuania, Valanciunas started his professional basketball journey with Lithuanian club Perlas in 2008, before showcasing his talents with Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius from 2010 to 2012. Valanciunas' talent was already under the radar of NBA scouts, as he emerged as a top prospect leading up to the 2011 NBA draft. He was eventually selected with the fifth overall pick by the Toronto Raptors in the 2011 NBA draft. With his NBA-ready physique and strong mentality, Jonas was instantly made a starter by the Raptors.

In his debut game, Valanciunas showcased his prowess by recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action. He became only the second Toronto Raptors rookie after Damon Stoudamire in 1995 to record a double-double in his debut game. This and many such remarkable performances in the rookie campaign earned Valanciunas recognition on the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2013.

Valanciunas played a pivotal role as the starting center for the Toronto Raptors during the mid-2010s, contributing to the team's success alongside the dynamic duo of Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan. During this time period, the Raptors made notable playoff runs, including appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals and Eastern Conference Semifinals. In early 2019, Valanciunas was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Marc Gasol, where he continued to showcase his talents for two seasons before finding his way to the New Orleans Pelicans. Despite the trades, Valanciunas remains a dominant force on the court.

Now with the New Orleans Pelicans as of March 2024, Jonas Valanciunas remains a key contributor to his team's success. In the 2023-24 NBA season with the New Orleans Pelicans, Jonas Valanciunas recorded averages of 13.4 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 0.4 steals per game, shooting 56.8% from the field and 36.5% from 3-point range with an average of 25.2 minutes per game.
