Onyeka Okongwu is an American center/power forward for the Atlanta Hawks. He is known for his unique combination of athleticism and ball-handling skills. Okongwu also has an uncanny ability to be an agile big man in the frontcourt, which makes the entire team’s offense dynamic.


Born on December 11, 2000, in Los Angeles, California, Okongwu began showcasing his basketball prowess at Chino Hills High School in California. Playing alongside the infamous “Ball Brothers” — Lonzo, LiAngelo and LaMelo, Okongwu also gained widespread attention as his highlights became viral sensations on social media.


His high school career at Chino Hills was highly successful, as he led his team to multiple state championships and earned prestigious accolades such as MaxPreps co-National Freshman of the Year and back-to-back California Mr. Basketball honors in 2018 and 2019.


Following his five-star rated standout high school career, Okongwu continued to impress at the collegiate level, playing for the USC Trojans. During his one-and-done college season for the Trojans, he was named on the First Team All-Pac-12.


In the 2020 NBA Draft, Okongwu was selected with the sixth overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks. Since then, he has primarily served as a backup big behind Clint Capela, but consistently exerts a positive influence on the game coming off the bench. With his athleticism, mobility and ball-handling abilities, Okongwu has shown significant development over his rookie contract, positioning him as a future of the Hawks' future frontcourt.
