For India, Ashish Nehra and Anil Kumble chipped in with two wickets each. However, Sourav Ganguly’s score of 117 off 119 balls and Virender Sehwag’s 126 off 104 balls helped to seal the win, as India went on to win the match by eight wickets in 40 overs.
India vs. England, 2nd match (ICC Champions Trophy 2006)
Four years later, the two sides met again in the ICC Champions Trophy. Unlike their previous encounter in Colombo, their match in Jaipur proved to be a low-scoring affair. Batting first, England’s top order was immediately dismissed Irfan Pathan and Munaf Patel. The seam-bowling duo claimed five wickets between them, leaving the Englishmen at a score of 55/5. Leg-spinner Romesh Powar picked up from where the seamers had left, as he dismissed the opposition at a score of 125. India went on to win the match after Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh’s high-scoring knocks.
India vs. England, 3rd match (ICC Champions Trophy 2013)
During the finals of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, India batted first and as had been the case throughout that tournament, Shikhar Dhawan (31 off 24) got them off to a brisk start. However, his dismissal triggered a collapse that saw India go from being 50/2 to 66/5 with quick dismissals of Dinesh Karthik, Suresh Raina, and MS Dhoni.
With just 129 runs on the board, India needed wickets at regular intervals, as England got reduced to 46/4 in the ninth over. However, Eoin Morgan (33 off 30) and Ravi Bopara (30 off 25) brought the equation down to 20 runs in 16 deliveries. Eventually, the duo fell on successive deliveries from Ishant Sharma, bringing India back into the game. Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Jos Buttler in the penultimate over and Ashwin then went on to defend 14 in the last over, sealing a memorable title win for the Men in Blue.
