
The ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy will see eight top ODI sides of the world battle it out from February 19 to March 9, 2025, to get their hands on the white jackets and the coveted silverware. The tournament will stage 15 high-stakes encounters across three venues in Pakistan and Dubai, which will host each of India’s three group-stage matches and the first semi-final. Dubai will also host the final if Team India manages to qualify for the summit clash on March 9, 2025.

India and South Africa have reportedly gone up against each other four times in the ICC Champions Trophy. The Indian cricket team has emerged victorious in each of those four encounters. Their first meeting took place in the 2000 ICC Knockout Trophy, where team India won by 95 runs. Their second meeting took place in Colombo in 2002, when the Sourav Ganguly-led unit overcame the Proteas in a closely contested match by 10 runs. 11 years later, both sides met again in the ICC Champions Trophy, with India once again emerging victorious in a high-scoring encounter. The last match between these two sides in the quadrennial event took place in 2017 when India defeated the Proteas by eight wickets at The Oval.

India vs. South Africa, 1st match (ICC Champions Trophy 2000)
The first encounter between India and South Africa in the ICC Champions Trophy took place in the semifinals of the 2000 edition. Batting first, India rode on an unbeaten 142-ball 141 to post 295/6 in 50 overs. Sachin Tendulkar (39 off 50), Rahul Dravid (58 off 81), and Yuvraj Singh (41 off 35) also chipped in with valuable contributions. In response, the Proteas were eventually dismissed for 200 in the 42nd over. Mark Boucher (60 off 77) was the leading run-getter for his team. For India, Zaheer Khan (2/27 in five overs), Anil Kumble (2/28 in nine overs) and Sachin Tendulkar (2/32 in five overs) picked two wickets each.
India vs. South Africa, 2nd match (ICC Champions Trophy 2002)
Two years later, India and South Africa again met in the semi-finals of the ICC Champions Trophy. India batted first and on the back of half-centuries from Virender Sehwag (59 off 58) and Yuvraj Singh (62 off 72) posted 261/9 in 50 overs. Shaun Pollock was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas, picking three crucial wickets for just 43 runs in nine overs.
Chasing 262, South Africa looked set to book their ticket to the final when opener Herschelle Gibbs was going all guns blazing. However, once Gibbs was retired hurt for 116 (119), the Proteas went from being 192/1 to 213/4. Jacques Kallis (97 off 133) stayed till the end, but Zaheer Khan and Virender Sehwag held their nerves at the death to seal a win for the Indians. Sehwag was adjudged Player of the Match for his all-round display, scoring 59 (58) & 3/25 (5).
India vs. South Africa, 3rd match (ICC Champions Trophy 2013)
In 2013, India and South Africa played against each other in the opening match of the tournament in Cardiff. Batting first, India had a stable start with a 94-ball 114 from Shikhar Dhawan to rack up 331/7 in 50 overs. This was Shikhar’s maiden ODI ton, and he was supported by fellow opener Rohit Sharma (65 off 81). The duo added 127 for the first wicket. In the end, Ravindra Jadeja’s 29-ball 47* helped the former champions get to a formidable total.
In response, South Africa lost two wickets in the form of Hashim Amla and Colin Ingram before Robin Peterson (68 off 72) and AB de Villiers (70 off 71) added 124 for the third wicket. However, the run-out of Peterson against the run of play triggered a collapse, reducing SA to 238/7. Ryan McLaren, who picked three wickets earlier that day, scored a brisk 61-ball 71* but India eventually sealed a 26-run victory.

In 2017, India and South Africa met in what was effectively a virtual knockout for both sides, thanks to their defeats to Sri Lanka and Pakistan, respectively. Batting first, the South African opening duo of Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla (35 off 54) added 76 runs. However, the dismissal of the opening pair led to a collapse, as the Proteas went from being 116/1 to 191 all-out. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked two wickets apiece. Chasing 192, India lost Rohit Sharma, but Shikhar Dhawan (78 off 83) and Virat Kohli (76* off 101) ensured that there were no further jitters, as the two-time champions won by eight wickets to qualify for the top four.
