He was born on December 27, 1976, in San Diego, California, and attended Poway High School, where he won the California state high school golf championship in 1994 and 1995. After high school, he played collegiate golf at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he was part of the team that won the 1998 NCAA Championship.
Hoffman turned professional in 2000 and earned his PGA Tour card in 2006 after finishing 19th on the Nationwide Tour (now Korn Ferry Tour) money list in 2005. He secured his first PGA Tour victory at the 2007 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. Over his career, he has won four PGA Tour events, including the 2010 Deutsche Bank Championship, the 2014 OHL Classic at Mayakoba, and the 2016 Valero Texas Open.
