The first event of the three FedEx Cup playoffs in the 2024 season, the FedEx St. Jude Championship, took place on August 15–18 at the TPC Southwind in Memphis, United States. The event was won by Hideki Matsuyama, defeating Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele by two strokes, with a score of 263, under 17. From the purse of $20 million, Matsuyama won $3.6 million.

The FedExCup is a season-long, point-based competition that determines the FedExCup Champion over the course of three events, known as the FedExCup Playoffs. Originally known as the "Westchester Classic," the FedEx St. Jude Championship made its debut in 1967 and became a part of the FedEx Cup Playoffs in 2007.

FedEx St. Jude Championship Purse History

The FedEx St. Jude Championship debuted nearly 60 years ago in 1967, under the banner of Westchester Classic; then it had a purse of $250,000 and the winner's share of $50,000, which remained stagnant until 1975. The event's sponsorship changed in 1976 when American Express boosted the purse to $300,000 and the winner's share to $60,000.

The purse was increased again in 1979, when another sponsor, Hanover, took over. During the decade-long sponsorship, the purse grew from $400,000 to $1 million. Thus, the event's purse grew over time due to sponsorship, which ranged from Buick to Barclays.

The purse increased from $5.7 million in 2006 to $7 million in 2007, when it became part of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Another major change occurred in 2022, when it increased to a purse of $15 million from $9.5 million in the previous year. The purse of $20 million in 2023 is the biggest to date and will be followed in 2024 as well.
