He turned professional in 2012 and initially played on the Gateway Tour, having his first pro win at the 2013 National Series 7.

However, he had his first PGA and overall fourth pro win at the 2022 Valero Texas Open. As of March 2025, he is ranked world No. 25 in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR), his career-high.

After Spaun's 2022 Valero Texas Open win, he gave a final-round interview to Doug Milne. On being asked about his family heritage, he explained that his maternal great-grandparents were from the Philippines, and relocated to California, where his maternal grandfather was born.

Spaun continued:

"But he (the maternal grandfather) spoke Ilocano, which is like a dialect of Tagalog. It's from a very small island, I wish I remember what it was. My whole mom's side, they're all half Filipino and half Mexican, so that's what makes up my heritage. Sadly, he passed a few years ago, but he was -- he was kind of the main Filipino person in our family."

Further, in a 2018 interview, Dollie told Brentley Romine of the USA Today:

John, J.J.'s father, gifted him a plastic set of golf clubs when he was three years old, according to Golf Week,. He posted a video of it and said:

"That swing, it's the same swing he has now."

He added that his son never received a formal lesson growing up. He also said that being a professional golfer is a "dream come true" for J.J., and "this is what he’s always wanted."

J.J. used to see his father playing golf from his stroller and when he became old enough to walk, he would hit anything he could into a makeshift hitting net that John had hung up. This included sockets from John's toolbox as well as balls and tees.
