Being a Canadian, Weir's first sports choice was hockey. He began passionately pursuing the sport and along with that he also played golf at times. However, one fine day when he met Jack Nicklaus at the age of 11, his complete view changed about golf and as he turned teen, he left playing hockey and began pursuing golf. Weir is left-handed and while playing golf he strongly used his left-handed shot. After someone suggested he use his right hand primarily, Weir wrote to his idol, Jack Nicklaus for advice about it who immediately replied and said to continue playing with his left hand as it felt natural to him.

Mike Weir turned professional in 1992. He started by participating in the Canadian Professional Golf Tour in which he won three events. Coming to his first PGA Tour, he had it in 1998, however, he lost his playing privileges due to insufficient performance. He tried again and then he bagged his first PGA Tour at the 1999 Air Canada Championship in Surrey, British Columbia.
His victory led him to be the first-ever Canadian to win a PGA Tour event in Canada in 45 years.
