In line with the declining ratings of golf events, the final round of this year's American Express saw a 56% decrease in viewership compared to last year.
The tournament's live broadcast on Golf Channel reportedly saw a significant drop in viewership for the final round on Sunday, with only 232K viewers tuning in. This figure is a sharp decline compared to the 534K viewers recorded last year. The final round of the American Express 2025 aired between 4 pm and 7 pm ET on Sunday.
The decline in golf's TV viewership has been a concerning trend in recent years, prompting even top players like Justin Thomas to address the issue. In a letter to the PGA Tour, Thomas proposed several strategies to boost ratings, including increased player interaction during rounds through mid-round interviews. However, several fans didn't agree with this particular input.
According to Rory McIlroy, the bitter rivalry between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf is negatively impacting both leagues' viewership as he feels that fans have been "fatigued" by the split.
However, it is important to note that viewership count does not include live streaming platforms that have steadily grown in popularity, especially amongst young fans.
The American Express 2025's final round was also streamed live on ESPN+ via PGA Tour Live. Early general coverage and featured group coverage began at 11:45 AM ET. Additionally, NBC Sports.com and the NBC Sports App offered a simulcast, along with the Golf Channel, for viewers with a valid cable subscription.
Sepp Straka won the American Express 2025 while Nick Dunlap won the 2024 edition of the tournament.
