From January 16 to 19, the 2025 American Express will take place at Pete Dye’s Stadium Course, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and the La Quinta Country Club. The event was first held at the Palm Springs Desert Golf Classic over 60 years ago. It was famous for its celebrity pro-am and used to have five rounds of competition (90 holes) instead of the usual four rounds (72 holes).

In 2020, Desert Classic Charities was replaced by Impact Through Golf, a nonprofit organization, to host the tournament. The event dropped its celebrity pro-am in 2012 and switched to a conventional 72-hole format across three distinct courses with a 54-hole cut, much like the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The American Express History

The Palm Springs Golf Classic, which was established in 1960, was a development of the Thunderbird Invitational, which had been played in Palm Springs since 1954. Since its inception, the event has changed several names and courses. In 1965 and 1986, the competition was renamed the Bob Hope Desert Classic and the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, respectively.

Played over five days on four distinct courses, its concept was unique among PGA Tour tournaments until 2012. After which, the event became the traditional 72-hole event and was played in three courses. Further, in 2012, the event was renamed to the Humana Challenge, then to the CareerBuilder Challenge in 2016, Desert Classic in 2019, and American Express in 2020.

The celebrity pro-ams at the event have made it incredibly well-known. Frank Sinatra and other celebrities participated in the 1970s; Gerald Ford (former president) participated in the game in 1977. Jimmy Fallon, Don Cheadle, and Samuel L. Jackson have also participated. Further, in 1995, Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush, Gerald Ford, Bob Hope, and Scott Hoch played at the event. Dwight Eisenhower was the first U.S. President to play at the event.

The American Express 2025 Schedule

The 2025 American Express will be held from 13 to 19 January. According to the event's official website, the main competition will take place from 16 to 19 January 2025, after practice rounds and pro-ams from 13 to 15 January 2025.

The American Express 2025 course

The American Express 2025 will take place at La Quinta, California, in the United States. PGA West's Nicklaus Course, the Pete Dye Stadium Course, and La Quinta Country Club will host the first three rounds of the event, which will feature a field of 156 players. Following these three rounds, those who made the cut will play in the final round at the Pete Dye Stadium Course. (via USA Today)

The PGA West consists of six golf courses designed by five golf architects and former players: Pete Dye, Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tom Weiskopf. It was once listed among Golf Digest's Top 100 Courses in America and was modeled after Scottish Links courses. Established in 1986 and first played in 1987, it was prohibited until 2015, when professional golfers signed a petition to have it removed as a host course because they felt it was too difficult for them.
