Tom Kim was favored to win the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, but he struggled with his game at the event and missed the cut after 36 holes. The South Korean golfer, who returned after Friday's round in which he carded 68, had tied for the lead at last week's Travelers Championship with current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.

His impressive performance last week made him the experts' favorite for the Rocket Mortgage Classic. However, Kim struggled throughout the two rounds of the ongoing PGA Tour event and missed the -4 cutline by just one stroke, finishing with a score of -3.

Kim started his outing at the Rocket Mortgage Classic on Thursday, June 27, and shot a round of 73. He made a bogey on the par-3 11th hole, followed by a birdie on the 15th. He then made a bogey on the 16th and a birdie on the 17th. Kim carded two bogeys and a birdie on the back nine to score +1. He improved in the second round but still missed the cut.

On Friday, Tom Kim teed off on the first hole and carded three birdies along with a bogey on the front nine. He added three birdies and a bogey on the back nine to settle for a score of 4-under 68.

Akshay Bhatia maintained the lead even after the second round with a score of -13, tied with Aaron Rai. Taylor Montgomery, Troy Merritt, Erik van Rooyen, and Cameron Young tied for third place with a score of -11.

Tom Kim's outing in 2024

In 2024, Tom Kim has played in 19 tournaments so far and made the cut in 16 of them. He started off his campaign with The Sentry event, where he tied for 45th place. Kim played four rounds of 68, 70, 74, and 66 in the Signature PGA Tour. He then competed at The American Express but failed to make the cut. He has two top-10 finishes and was the runner-up at the Travelers Championship.

He was close to a win at the Travelers Championship but ended up settling for second place. Following the Signature event, Kim opened up about his performance and said that he enjoyed playing against Scheffler in the playoff.

Speaking of his performance, Tom Kim said (via Tennis World USA):

“Victories are so much fun, that’s why you play golf, to lift up some trophies, but when you play really well, and you finish second to the top-ranked golfer in the world, but as much as golf I play with him and as close as I am with him, he’s still really, really good."

Earlier this year, Tom Kim withdrew from The Players Championship. He has been playing decent golf this season but is still looking for his first victory of the year. Having turned pro in 2018, Tom Kim has won three PGA Tour events.
