The PGA Tour professional golf tournament in Texas, known for sponsorship reasons as the Charles Schwab Challenge since 2019, is called the Colonial National Invitation. It is held annually in May in Fort Worth at Colonial Country Club, the event's organiser. On the PGA Tour, it is one of five invitational competitions; the first one was contested in 1946, 78 years ago.
Charles Schwab Challenge 2024 History
Founded in 1946, 78 years ago, the tournament pays tribute to golf's past by outfitting its champions and esteemed committee chairmen with official Scottish tartan plaid jackets. The Wall of Champions on the first tee, which is etched with the name and score of every champion going back to 1946, as well as the winners of the 1975 Tournament Players Championship, the 1941 U.S. Open, and the 1991 U.S. Women's Open, is another custom that feeds Colonial history.
Unofficially, the tournament is linked to Ben Hogan (1912–1997), a longtime resident of Fort Worth who holds the record for most tournament victories with five. Among the greatest golfers in history, he won nine major championships, six of which came following a nearly fatal car accident in 1949 that required two months of hospitalisation. A statue of Hogan at swing completion is located close to the clubhouse. In 1953, Hogan's final three significant victories came in quick succession.
After Babe Zaharias made three cuts as an amateur in 1945, Annika Sörenstam became the first woman to compete in a PGA Tour event in 58 years when she participated in the 2003 competition. Despite receiving much media attention for her participation, Sörenstam shot 71 and 74, missing the cut by four strokes. The competition took place on June 11–14, 2020, and it was the first PGA Tour event after the COVID-19 outbreak disrupted the regular calendar in mid-March. For optimal health and safety, there were no spectators at the event—a first for the PGA Tour.

Charles Schwab Challenge 2024 Course
In Fort Worth, Texas, Colonial Country Club is a private golf club in the southern United States. The Colonial National Invitation, a PGA Tour tournament, has been held at the club every year since 1946, making it the longest-running non-major tour event to be held there. The golf course is situated northwest of the Texas Christian University campus, on the south bank of the Trinity River's Clear Fork.
Colonial Country Club's golf course was designed by Perry Maxwell of Oklahoma and John Bredemus from Texas. The par-70 course, which is currently 7,209 yards (6,592 metres) in length, has the nearby residential area encircling it for the most part, and the Trinity River (Clear Fork) on its northern border. The 1941 course measured 7,035 yards (6,433 metres), which was a considerable distance at the time.
The course has played host to three major or notable professional golf competitions in addition to the yearly PGA Tour event: the 1941 U.S. Open, the 1975 Tournament Players Championship (which Al Geiberger won), and the 1991 U.S. Women's Open (which Meg Mallon won).
