Doug Ghim came close to registering his maiden win on the PGA Tour. The 28-year-old golfer lost the Shriners Children’s Open title to J.T. Poston by a stroke’s margin on Sunday (October 20) in Las Vegas. Following the round, the Des Plaines native stated he was “obviously disappointed.”
Reflecting on his T2 finish at TPC Summerlin, Ghim noted that he ‘played as well as he could’ve.’ The golfer went on to share his experience of playing final rounds in the past and dubbed it “pretty uncomfortable.” He noted that the final round of the Shriners Children’s Open, where he took on Poston for the title, was no different.
The World No. 148 golfer, who’s teed off 141 times on the PGA Tour, added that the idea of winning comes with a lot of ‘pressure.’ He further claimed to do a ‘better job’ at managing the ‘discomfort’ on Sunday.
Reflecting on his past final round experiences, Doug Ghim said in his post-event press conference at Las Vegas, as quoted by ASAP Sports:
“I guess at the end of the day you learn from all those times, and I guess it can be pretty uncomfortable. Today was no different. It was still just an uncomfortable. But little things like being at my home course obviously helps a little bit. I guess at the end of the day it was just to try to take my time and try to really enjoy being uncomfortable as long as possible.
"It's really, really hard to do that because obviously it's a lot of pressure and everything I've ever dreamed of, right, is winning out here. So doing my best to not think about those things, but at the same time embrace the discomfort throughout the whole round. I think today I did a better job of just staying within that discomfort the whole day instead of trying to run away from it.”
Doug Ghim flies to Japan for the ZOZO Championship
The FedEx Cup Fall series schedule will continue next week at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club in Chiba, Japan, with the 2024 ZOZO Championship. Doug Ghim is confirmed to tee up at the event and was set to fly out soon after the Shriners Children’s Open play.
Ghim noted that the T2 performance at TPC Summerlin will give him a major ‘confidence boost’ for the rest of the season, including the upcoming outing to Japan. The golfer dubbed the ZOZO outing “fun” as it’ll be on “the other side of the world” and stated he was “grateful for the opportunity.”
Doug Ghim added in the presser:
“It (Shriners Children’s Open result) is definitely a confidence boost moving forward. I'm obviously disappointed. At the end of the day J.T. (Poston) played well…
"The fact that we get to go and play the ZOZO, and I know there is a lot of players that would like to be there and won't be able to, so it'll be a fun challenge. It's going to be a lot of fun being on the other side of the world. Yeah, I'm grateful for the opportunity.”
It is pertinent to note that Doug Ghim will face a stacked 78-man field at the ZOZO Championship in Chiba. Reigning champion Collin Morikawa will join the likes of Rickie Fowler, Joel Dahmen, Max Homa, Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas, and Sahith Theegala, among others at the FedEx Fall schedule event.
