Joel Dahmen was penalized for having more than 14 clubs during the first round of the Shriners Children's Open. This incident reminded former PGA Tour pro Smylie Kaufman of his recurring nightmare about facing this situation.
On Thursday, October 17, Dahmen carded a 5-over 76 in the opening round. He had actually shot a 1-over 72 but was handed a four-stroke penalty for carrying 15 clubs, which was discovered on the 4th hole of his round.
Following the incident, Kaufman shared his nightmare on X.
"My reoccurring nightmare is that I have more than 14 clubs in my bag. Joel Dahmen just lived my nightmare being accessed a 4 shot penalty for having his 4 iron (15th club) in the bag," he wrote.
As per Rule 4.1b, a player is only allowed to have 14 clubs while playing in an event. Carrying an extra club results in a two-stroke penalty for each hole before the player realizes it. However, the maximum penalty is four strokes. Dahmen discovered the violation on the fourth hole, so he was penalized four strokes.
"Bizarr-o"- Joel Dahmen reacts to the four-stroke penalty at the Shriners Children's Open
In the post-round interview, the first question Joel Dahmen was asked was about the four-shot penalty.
"Bizarr-o. Never happened to me before," he said. "I travel with 15, 16 clubs. I think most people out here do depending on conditions and courses."
Dahmen added that he had never faced such a situation despite traveling here for a long time.
"I'd like it blame Geno (Bonnalie)," he continued. "That would be the easy thing to do. It's not his fault either. I played Tuesday and Wednesday out here. We didn't see it in there. It was an extra 4-iron, so I had two 4-irons in the bag."
"Why, I don't know. I don't know how it got there. It sucks. It sucks at the spot I'm in as well. Yeah, we got to 4 tee and I grabbed a water and I walked over to my bag and I saw a 4-iron that was in the wrong spot and our stuff is always in the right spot. It wasn't in the right spot," he added.
Dahmen further stated that it was tough to refocus after what happened, describing the situation as frustrating and disappointing.
