The Charles Schwab Challenge was not a Major tournament, nor was it an elevated Signature Event on the PGA Tour. Therefore, it had a more normal prize purse, but still offered golfers the chance to earn a portion of $9.1 million. The winner would get $1.638 million of that total, so there was plenty on the line at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas this weekend.
That winner ended up being Davis Riley, who entered the fourth round with a four-stroke lead after three brilliant days of golf. He was one of just two who were 10 under or better after the third round, which proved to be enough for the win.
He did have to contend with Scottie Scheffler, who was likely a bit too close for comfort. Scheffler has been red hot this season, and no lead is safe when he's in the field. Nevertheless, Riley was victorious and earned his first 2024 victory.
Davis Riley earns first solo career victory
For the first time in 2024, Davis Riley was a winner on the PGA Tour. His performance at the Charles Schwab Challenge, which was head and shoulders above most of the rest of the field, earned him that.
However, it was not the first time he'd held a trophy. This was his second career win, with his first coming in the 2023 Zurich Classic. However, that is a group event. Since 2017, the Zurich Classic has been a duo tournament.
He won as a pair with Nick Hardy, so this triumph at the 2024 Charles Schwab Challenge marks the first time that Riley alone has won on tour. He did win twice on the Korn Ferry Tour after turning pro in 2019 and landed on the Tour in 2021, but he had been winless by himself since then.
Riley had come close a few times in his career. He tied for eighth at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational. He tied for seventh at the 2021 Butterfield Bermuda Championship. He had a solo fifth at the 2022 Mexico Open.
In 2024, he had not even placed top 10 before winning the Charles Schwab Challenge. Riley's best outing had been a T14 at the Houston Open. Riley had also missed the cut in seven out of 14 starts before finally breaking out for a win.
