The American Express is the next stop on the PGA Tour for the 2025 season. The event will be played January 16-19 at its usual venue, La Quinta Country Club in California.

The tournament has a purse of $8.8 million, up $400,000 from a year ago. The winner's share is $1.584 million, which is $72,000 more than what Nick Dunlap was due when he won in 2024. Dunlap was ineligible to collect the prize because he won as an amateur.

The American Express has been played since 1954, although it has been part of the PGA Tour calendar since 1960. The tournament was born as the Thunderbird Invitational, but when it was upgraded it was renamed the Palm Springs Golf Classic and had the legendary Arnold Palmer as the first champion of this new stage.

Palmer himself is the event's all-time leading winner with five titles. Other multiple winners include Billy Casper, Johnny Miller, John Mahaffey, Corey Pavin, Phil Mickelson, Bill Haas, Hudson Swaford and Jon Rahm, all with two victories.

The defending champion for the 2025 edition is Nick Dunlap, who won in 2024 as an amateur thanks to a sponsor exemption. Dunlap became the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since 1991 (Mickelson, Tucson Open).

Dunlap's performance to win the 2024 edition of The American Express had several historic overtones. The then 20-year-old shot a 12-under 60 in the third round, tying the best score by an amateur on the PGA Tour (Patrick Cantlay, 2011 Travelers Championship).

Nick Dunlap also set a 72-hole record for the event (29-under 259) and, at 20 years and 29 days, became the second-youngest winner on the PGA Tour in 90 years. Only Jordan Spieth won younger (2013 John Deere Classic, 19 years and 352 days).
