The United States Open Championship, also referred to as the U.S. Open, is the country's yearly open golf championship. It is officially scheduled on the PGA Tour and the European Tour schedules, and it is the third of the four major golf tournaments for men. The winner is the player with the fewest strokes overall.
The competition has been 72 holes of stroke play (4 rounds on an 18-hole course) since 1898, though it followed match-play for the initial three years starting in 1895. The United States Golf Association (USGA) organizes it in the middle of June and is held on a variety of courses, all of which are designed to make scoring extremely challenging. Of the four major championships, the U.S. Open has the greatest purse as of 2024—$21.5 million.
Who won the PGA U.S. Open Championship in 2024?
Bryson DeChambeau won at the 2024 US Open and took home the winner's share of $4.3 million of the $21.5 million purse. He defeated Rory McIlroy by one stroke to win his second major championship at the same event in 2020.
DeChambeau won by hitting a 4-foot par putt to get up and down from a bunker 55 yards out to finish the tournament on 6-under 274. With five holes remaining, McIlroy was ahead by two shots, but he lost the tournament after missing two putts inside four feet.
Who won the PGA U.S. Open Championship in 2023?
After missing the cut in his previous two U.S. Opens, Wyndham Clark, who had never finished higher than 75th in a major championship, shot a final-round 70 to finish at 10-under-par for the tournament and defeat four-time major champion Rory McIlroy by one shot to win his first-ever U.S. Open and major championship.
In the opening round, Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele shot 62 (−8), breaking the U.S. Open score record. At the beginning of the last round, Fowler and Clark were tied for the lead; Schauffele finished in 10th place. Fowler ultimately tied for fifth place.
