To manage a large field (around 156 players), there's a cut after 36 holes. Only the top 60 players and ties advance to compete in the prestigious final two rounds. While it's primarily a professional event, the US Open allows highly skilled amateurs to compete. However, the bar is high. They need a handicap of 4.0 or lower to even enter the grueling local and sectional qualifying rounds.

The youngest champion in US Open history was John McDermott, who won in 1911 at the tender age of 19 and 11 months old, whereas the record for oldest champion goes to Hale Irwin, who triumphed in 1990 at a remarkable 54 years old.
