The inaugural US Open was held in 1895 at Newport Golf Club in Rhode Island, one of the five founding clubs of the United States Golf Association. And since then, one of the four Major Championships in men's golf, the national open of the nation, has spread far and wide.
The US Open has been held on some of the world's most outstanding courses, including the most well-known ones like Pebble Beach, Congressional, Winged Foot, and Shinnecock Hills. With nine US Opens held there thus far, Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania has hosted the most. With the competition returning to Oakmont in the upcoming years, that record is expected to rise. It's already scheduled for 2025, 2033, 2042 and 2049!

How do they choose the US Open course?
The US Open is held at courses that are among the country's most challenging, as the USGA chose. The US Open aims to demonstrate that it is the most demanding test for golfers. All aspects of shot-making, mental toughness, and physical endurance should be tested on a US Open course under intense pressure reserved for the top levels of championship golf.
The following list of 13 criteria impacts the entire US Open course setup. These variables are mixed differently from year to year and course to course. When evaluating a course setup, it is important to consider the overall outcome rather than just one aspect.
The 13 factors are as follows:
1. Length, variance, and playing qualities of each hole
2. The overall length of the golf course in relation to the total par Teeing ground positions (i.e., play angles and daily distance variations)
3. Fairway dimensions and shapes
4. The firmness and speed of the fairways;
5. The green's speed about the putting greens' percentage slopes and contours
6. Applying green stiffness
7. Approximate height, density, and severity levels
8. Bunker preparation (i.e., posing a recovery difficulty)
9. Green surrounds (such as closely mowed areas against primary rough);
10. Hole positions (including wind direction, estimated length of approach shot, and balance in left-right and front-back placement)
11. Options for risk and return
12. Expected meteorological conditions
13. Pace of play. Know More : US Open Course
