The third golf major of the season is the US Open, which, as its name suggests, is held in the United States in mid-June annually. The major event was established nearly 130 years ago, in 1895, by the United States Golf Association (USGA). It follows a 72-hole stroke play format; however, it once followed a match-play format as well, which was the initial format for three years.

The US Open has a field of 156 professional and amateur players; the former's professional status is enough to qualify, but the latter must have a handicap of less than or equal to 1.4. It has been played on more than 50 courses over the years, with an alternative but repetitive format.

Where is the 2024 US Open?

The 2024 US Open will be held at Pinehurst Resort & C.C., Course No. 2, in North Carolina. Pinehurst is certainly used to hosting major tournaments; this is particularly relevant to the No. 2 course.

The resort in North Carolina, which has nine different 18-hole golf courses, has actually hosted the U.S. Open three times already: in 1999, 2005, and 2014 (the latter year they also hosted the U.S. Women's Open). Furthermore, the resort has played host to the Ryder Cup, one PGA Championship, and three U.S. amateur championships.

Pinehurst's 2024 U.S. Open site states that “the championship’s return will mark the first time in over a century the USGA has awarded four Opens to a single site in a span of 25 years.”
