Top 10 remaining NFL free agents

2018 NFL Draft
2018 NFL Draft

It has been over three months since the 2018 NFL offseason began. Like always, there was a frenzy of teams signing and trading players. Then came the annual NFL Draft, which made a record in the number of views and TV ratings. Once the draft ends, the offseason chaos tends to die down, yet there are always players who aren't signed. Here are my top 10 remaining free agents, in no particular order.

Dez Bryant, WR

Dallas Cowboys v Oakland Raiders
Dallas Cowboys v Oakland Raiders

We all know about he began ranting on Twitter after being released by the Dallas Cowboys and called their decision to do so "very personal." After his release, many thought that he would be under the radar for several teams. But since then, he has not had a single scheduled visit.

As of now, the only team that contacted him and offered him a contract were the Baltimore Ravens, and that deal was a multi-year contract. However, Bryant has shown that he wants a one-year "prove it" deal and to be able to play the Cowboys twice a season.

While in the last three seasons he has not been as productive, Bryant has the capability to be a starting WR for a team looking for a veteran that can be lethal. It would be a shocker to see him not on a team's roster in Week 1 of the 2018 season.

Brandon Marshall, WR

Los Angeles Chargers v New York Giants

Marshall is another WR who has not been picked up by another team. He was released by the New York Giants after having a short-lived season in which he played just 5 games before suffering a season-ending injury on his ankle.

He joined the Giants, who already had Odell Beckham Jr. and Sterling Shepard, in hopes of being a part of a trio of wide receivers who would benefit quarterback Eli Manning. Just like Bryant, Marshall is a veteran who can rack up 1,000 yards in a season with the right team. But for now, no team has contacted him about possibly signing with them.

DeMarco Murray, RB

Jacksonville Jaguars v Tennessee Titans

This could be the end for Murray, or it could be a new chapter in his journey. He was released by the Tennessee Titans after spending two seasons with them. While he has stayed mostly healthy in the seven seasons he has been in the league, teams these days are going young at the running back position. Murray will likely be picked up for depth/veteran presence or if a team is in greater need of a running back because of injuries.

Eric Reid, SS

Seattle Seahawks v San Francisco 49ers
Seattle Seahawks v San Francisco 49ers

The former 1st round pick filed a grievance in the NFL for team owners colluding against him and not signing him because of his protests against President Donald Trump, just like quarterback Colin Kaepernick. His only visit since being released from the San Francisco 49ers has been with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Reid had played all five seasons of his career with the 49ers and became a free agent because his contract expired. Because he filed this grievance, it is likely he won't be on a team's roster until an injury occurs, but based on what has happened with Kaepernick, it is likely that will not happen, either.

Johnathan Hankins, DT

Arizona Cardinals v Indianapolis Colts

A surprising free agent who still hasn't been signed after multiple team visits, Hankins was considered a top defensive tackle after he was released by the Indianapolis Colts. He played just one year for them after being with the Giants for four seasons.

He was likely cut by the Colts because of the cap hit and new head coach Frank Reich wanted to rebuild the team. Hankins was supposedly a prime target for the Washington Redskins, but after selecting a defensive tackle in the 1st round, it's unlikely now that they will sign him. Hankins is just 26 years old, so expect him to be on a team's roster very soon.

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (DRC), CB

Detroit Lions v New York Giants

Probably one of the best performing players for the Giants, DRC was released by the team because of the cap hit. He had multiple visits, one of the first being with Redskins which seemed to have gone well, but in the end, they did not sign him.

In his last season with the Giants, there were internal issues regarding his conduct with the team, but that shouldn't stop teams from signing him. At 32 years old, he still has a couple seasons left in him before hanging up the cleats. DRC can absolutely be a great depth player for teams as well as veteran presence with 10 seasons under his belt.

Coby Fleener, TE

Carolina Panthers v New Orleans Saints
Carolina Panthers v New Orleans Saints

Fleener is one of the best performing tight ends in the league, so it was somewhat of a surprise move when the New Orleans Saints released him. He suffered a concussion late last season, but the main reason to release him was because of the cap hit the Saints would have had to take on.

Fleener also played for the Colts and was a great player under quarterback Andrew Luck. He still has plenty to show in the league, but at this point, teams will probably use him for depth and he will become a journeyman.

Bashaud Breeland, CB

Buffalo Bills v Washington Redskins
Buffalo Bills v Washington Redskins

An emerging cornerback for the Redskins, Breeland was allowed by the team to test the market after he became a free agent. He signed a contract with the Carolina Panthers, but the deal was voided after he failed a physical. Since then, neither the Redskins nor any other team have contacted him.

This was surprising, as the Redskins lost cornerback Kendall Fuller in the Alex Smith trade and needed help in the secondary. When in the slot, Breeland played well and was very healthy. If he is not on a team's roster (or back with the Redskins) by the first week of the regular season, it would be a big surprise.

Brian Cushing, LB

Chicago Bears v Houston Texans
Chicago Bears v Houston Texans

A linebacker that had a big role in the Houston Texans defense was released after playing nine seasons for them. He played just five games last season due to injuries and a PED suspension.

Injuries have caused him to miss several games in multiple seasons, but when he was on the field, he proved to be a valuable player. For now, though, Cushing isn't a high-caliber player due to his injury history, PED suspensions and age. He can be a great veteran presence and depth option, something teams such as the New England Patriots could use.

Adrian Peterson, RB

New Orleans Saints v Minnesota Vikings
New Orleans Saints v Minnesota Vikings

Many will say that Peterson's days are done, and that is certainly true. But he has not stated that he is retiring just yet. After being released by the Vikings, signing with the Saints, and then being traded to the Cardinals, he had a wild 2017 season. But now the Saints are showing possible interest in signing him.

The Saints are set with Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram Jr. in the backfield, but Peterson will add great depth to the team. Considering that Ingram is suspended the first 4 games of the 2018 season, they could certainly sign Peterson to a one-year deal to have someone back up Kamara.
