Commentary

With that, we come to the end of our coverage for now. Arnos Vale witnessed something never thought of, really! Many, and we dare say almost everyone around the world thought that Australia will win and reach the semis with India from Group 1. They won the toss, chose to bowl and seemed to have things under control initially. Then, everything turned out and how! Barring Pat Cummins' hat-trick and Glenn Maxwell's half-century, it was all Afghanistan! Rashid Khan's men were outstanding tonight! Whether it was the opening partnership, whether it was the finish to the their innings, whether it was the bowling of Naveen ul Haq and Gulbadin Naib or whether it was the fielding and captaincy, the Afghans brought out their A game and stunned the Aussies big time! Now, three teams are well and truly in with a shout to qualify for the semi-finals from this group. Rashid Khan (Afghanistan captain): I don't think this comes in as a surprise. We've done a lot of work to improve and get to this stage, so I'm not surprised with this win. Going by the conditions, and more so the composition of the opposition, we pick our teams. Against India as well, we went with the team best suited but fell short. Today, we stuck to the team that won us matches earlier on. And it paid dividends. It definitely wasn't an easy wicket to bat on, we struggled towards the end, but it was all about doing the job earlier on in the piece. This win should give the fans all around the world and back home, a lot of joy. We now give ourselves every opportunity of qualifying for the semi-finals. It's going to be a massive match, our last one!

Mitchell Marsh (Australia captain): I think they probably got 20 runs too many, but the better way to put it is that we were outplayed tonight. We did consider batting first tonight, but still, I think bowling first was the right decision from out point of view with the kind of quality we had. It wasn't the easiest of wickets to bat on, but then, both teams batted on it and we came second, so, we can't complain. India are next, yes. Well, we cannot ask for a better team to do it against when it comes to qualifying for the semis, so, we are up for it.

Gulbadin Naib (Player of the Match): Thanks to the Almighty. We waited for a long time. Not just for me, but my nation and our people, it is a big achievement. Thanks to everyone who supported us in this journey. We worked hard in the last two months and the result is in front of you. The wicket wasn't good to bat on. At the start of our innings, the ball was bouncing a lot. Thanks to god that Rashid trusted me. It is a team effort. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Naveen-ul-Haq gave us a good start. Thanks to God that we finally beat Australia. If you look at our history, it is not much but we have achieved a lot in the last ten years. We beat New Zealand in the group stage, Australia now. Thanks to the management. We are lucky to have this team. At the start of the tournament, we focused on each and every game. We will rest tomorrow and think about the next game after that.

Let this sink in! Afghanistan have made a massive statement! They have defeated a team super-confident and almost sure of making the final four. They have, all of a sudden, changed the complexion of Group 1! They have done themselves a great favour of reaching the semi-finals. Australia, well, they are left licking their wounds right now!

It all began with the wicket of Travis Head! Naveen ul Haq bowling the first over and knocked over the attacking left-hander for no score was the tone-setter. Then came two quick wickets of skipper Mitchell Marsh and David Warner, which made life even more difficult for the Aussies.

But when Glenn Maxwell is out there against Afghanistan, he won't back down, isn't it? First with Marcus Stoinis, and then with Matthew Wade, the 'Big Show' made the Afghans scratch their heads with some stunning shots all around the ground.

The right-hander went on to bring up a superb half-century and threatened to single-handedly knock Afghanistan out of the tournament! In the meanwhile, both Marcus Stoinis and Tim David were picked up by Gulbadin Naib. Naib was getting the ball to nip off the pitch and his slower balls were sitting nicely in the surface.

But who was stopping Gulbadin tonight? He bowled four overs on the trot and went on take two more wickets, including that of Maxwell! The in-form batter slashed to backward point in the air and Noor Ahmad there made no mistake in taking a fine catch low to his left! Pat Cummins thought he could hack one across the line to him but it did him for, castling him by staying low!

One cannot forget the wicket of Matthew Wade in Rashid Khan's last over! Rashid brought himself back at just the right time, when Maxwell was dismissed. And instantly, he got Wade off a top-edged sweep which got brilliantly caught at short fine-leg.

The Australian lower-order tried as hard as they could, but neither had the quality to score, nor had the number of balls remaining in their favour. Finally, with Adam Zampa getting holed out at long-on to Mohammad Nabi off the bowling of Azmatullah Omarzai, Afghanistan completed a crucial win at St. Vincent and managed to stay alive in the competition.

Australia, facing a rampant Indian team next, are in deep trouble at the moment because a loss to the Men in Blue can knock them out of the tournament with Afghanistan winning their final match against Bangladesh!
