That brings us to the end of our cricket coverage for the day. Keshav Maharaj, South Africa captain: (On David Miller's injury) Woke up with a niggle this morning, fingers crossed he'll be ready for the next game. The boys did really well today. The guys got their opportunities and did really well, there's a healthy competition for the spots in the team, which makes the coach's life tougher, but it's a good headache to have! Tucker and Dockrell batted really well, but our bowlers stuck to the plans. Day of rest tomorrow (laughs).

Andrew Balbirnie, Ireland captain: The pitch was good, we were in the game for a lot of it, but the 2 wickets in 2 balls made the difference. The ground here is smaller than a lot of the other grounds, but you've got to deal with all of these in international cricket. We have been playing good cricket, it shows in our performance, but we've got to produce results. (On whether Ireland can level the series on Friday) Yeah, think so, we played good cricket and we can get close.

Reeza Hendricks has been adjudged the Player of the match for his blistering innings that set up the game for South Africa!

Reeza Hendricks: That's a tricky question, I've been working really hard, past couple of weeks, months and so forth. As cricket goes, bit of momentum with me and hoping to ride the way as much as possible. Unfortunately, we lost wickets early, needed the partnership at that time, Markram played a fantastic innings and get us into good position. There's a lot of depth in the squad, guys obviously looking to go out there to put in good performances, there's also quality in the side.

The start to the run-chase was good for Ireland, with Andrew Balbirnie getting off to a decent start. Paul Stirling got in on the action as well soon, with a flat six off Ngidi followed up by a boundary, but not before losing his skipper, who had to depart in the previous over, playing one shot too many. Stirling was just beginning to warm up to the chase when he was trapped in front by an in-ducker from Parnell over the wicket and had to depart as well.

A counter-attack of absolute blitzkrieg nature followed from Lorcan Tucker, who came up the order at 3. He took on the two quick bowlers on either side of the end of the powerplay, and was looking in ominous form. Unfortunately for him, unlike what Hendricks received in the first innings, he wasn't getting enough support from the other end as wickets kept tumbling, and the South African spinners were starting to take the game away as Tucker kept fighting what was starting to turn out to be a lone battle.

That was until the arrival of George Dockrell, who absolutely ripped into Shamsi in the 11th over, taking 15 off it and giving Ireland some much-needed momentum. Maharaj delivered a miserly following over before pace was re-introduced, and the Irish duo of Tucker and Dockrell made merry until the 15th over!

Pretorius then hit the wide yorker area on most of the 16th over and sucked some of the momenta out. Tucker smashed 10 off two Shamsi deliveries, bringing the equation down to 42 off 19 before perishing trying to go for the extravagant sweep. Dockrell followed next ball itself, and there wasn't much left in the game after that. Adair and McBrine tried to slog Ireland closer, but they were never going to be able to do so against the much-seasoned South African bowlers. South Africa take the first T20I by 21 runs, both teams meet each other again on Friday!

Ireland fight and fight against all odds, but they fall short yet again. They have to convert one of these good games into a win soon. South Africa take the first of the two T20Is by 21 runs!
