Commentary

We all were wondering what the pitch would be like tonight at the Eden Gardens and whether KKR would get what they wanted. And after tonight's game, we can say that their bowlers did definitely get into the game. Their batters too did the job before that and in the end, was a rather complete performance. As for SRH, there is some thinking to do now, if not more. They need to start winning games, especially at home to stay in the race. Or else, drifting away is a common case in the IPL, as we know! Vaibhav Arora is the Player of the Match. He says, "I am always prepared before itself. That is because I am told in advance that I will go in as the Impact Player. When we bolw the fifth or sixth over, there is not much swing. So, we try to deploy different tactics. Today, the slower ball was gripping a bit. We also look to go for yorkers. You know how the batters play today. We plan, we discuss, which batter can charge first ball, which batter does not. It helps to have world class spinners, but our job is to give them a good start by taking wickets at the top."

Ajinkya Rahane: "This game was really important for us. Winning by a big margin was crucial for us. We wanted to bowl first. The toss did not go our way, we lost early wickets too. But then, the discussion was to steady it till the 11th-12th over. The last two games did not go our way but we learnt a lot from them. When Rinku and Venkatesh were batting. We wanted to get another 50-60 runs in the last 30 balls. Those guys can play some really good shots. We had Moeen, Ramandeep and Russell waiting in the wings too. The ball gripped a bit. We had three quality spinners too. Moeen unfortunately did not get the chance to bowl. Vaibhav and Harshit set the tone up top."

Our seamers too did a great job, Vaibhav up front was brilliant with the wickets. Ajinkya's captaincy shone through tonight. And we also wanted to keep the flow of wickets going. Mind you, as long as Heinrich Klaasen is around, no game is won or lost. So that we got him was a big relief! We were disappointed at the loss in Mumbai, but we regrouped quickly and got things going. The preparation is nothing different, it's all about repeating things and staying relevant with the whole process. In the IPL, the first four matches give the teams the scope to set it. We can now keep building on it."

Pat Cummins (Sunrisers Hyderabad captain): "Not a great night tonight! I thought 200 was gettable. But we gave away a few too many in the field and did not bat well enough. Three games in a row haven't come off for us, still think our batters are best taking it on, but could they have done it differently, is what we need to consider. They batted well, but our bowling wasn't too bad. Not too sure about not picking Adam Zampa, we only bowled three overs of spin, and it didn't spin too much I felt. We will sit down and discuss, but it's a long tournament and we now go back home on a pitch we know playing really well."

The fanfare around Sunrisers' batting line-up has been akin to that of a high-end sports car blazing through the streets filled with monotonous looking everyday rides of ordinary people. However, what unfolded today was more like an old rusty bicycle being driven through a muddy road. The one whose chain comes off and yet the rider keeps on pushing the paddles hard, thinking that it would somehow work. They played their shots. After all, that is what the skipper asked them to. With the target of 200 on the board, perhaps it made sense too. But the execution was off. Before we even realized it, they were 9/3. Only the reputation of Heinrich Klaasen kept the fans hooked to the action. In reality, SRH never looked like chasing that one down.

For Kolkata, three Vs stood tall. One with the bat, two with the ball. Let's talk about the bowlers first. Vaibhav Arora set the tone up top dismissing Travis Head and Ishan Kishan. Varun Chakaravarthy spun a web in the middle overs. Both had able partners bowling in tandem. The seamer had Harshit Rana for company, who executed the plan of taking it out of the swashbuckling lefties' reach by hurling the ball outside off to perfection. The mystery spinner had poker-faced Sunil Narine, who even let off a wicket by not appealing for a certain caught behind. Yet, SRH's innings went nowhere. Earlier, they had squandered a good start with the ball too.

Kolkata Knight Riders' batting innings did not start on the right note. Their openers were dismissed cheaply. But four robust knocks took eventually took them to 200. The first was skipper Rahane's 27-ball-38, characterized not by his usual calm demeanor and textbook style strokes but by brash cross-batted swishes that fetched him maximum four times. Then, there was Angkrish Raghuvanshi's sturdiness garnished with a dash of elegance and effortlessness. A 17-ball-32 against Rinku Singh's name might make one guess that it was another one of those brisk cameos from the southpaw. But it wasn't. He started off in circumspect manner, as the situation demanded, and teed off at the right time towards the end.

However, all three of those were overshadowed by Venkatesh Iyer's blitzkrieg towards the end. KKR's 'most expensive' player showed the world what panache is. That languid flow of his bat was like poetry in motion tonight. The connection with the ball was robust on most occasions and 10 off the 29 balls he faced were sent beyond the ropes.
SRH dropped two catches too. However, on a night where nothing really went right for them, those feel like just a couple more drops in the ocean.
