That brings the curtains on our coverage of this BBL 2023 game between the Melbourne Stars and the Hobart Hurricanes. For now, it's Soumarya Dutta, signing off on behalf of Bidipto Datta. See you soon.
Nathan Ellis has been adjudged the Player of the Match! Here is what he has to say.
Nathan Ellis: I enjoyed scoring some runs today, needed those hits towards the end and got them thankfully! We stayed in the fight the whole way through the 40 overs. We are disappointed to have finished outside of the top four because out change room has a lot of belief and we know how good a team we can be! Anyway, I feel we have got good things coming up. The ribs are fine, maybe a bit of bruise, but, I feel okay.
Hobart Hurricanes win by 7 runs and finish off with the fifth place in the points table.
Melbourne Stars 180/4 in 20 overs Beau Webster 55*(43) | Nathan Ellis 2/29 Marcus Stoinis 48(32) | Chris Jordan 1/31
Beau Webster smashed a monstrous six of the final ball of the game and finished off with a 50 but the Melbourne Stars still fell short of the target by just 7 runs. Peter Hatzoglou had been really expensive throughout but he held his nerve when it mattered the most and sealed the deal for the visitors.
The Stars started off well with Lawrence and Rogers getting off the blocks quickly but they lost a couple of wickets in quick succession with both the openers going back to the hut. Beau Webster joined Glenn Maxwell at the crease at that stage of the game and pair did well to resurrect the innings. Maxwell teed off and started to go for the big shots but unfortunately for him, he lost his shape and ended up falling to Ellis.
Stoinis joined Webster at that stage of the innings and he batted really well for his 48. He went big in the power surge and managed to keep the Melbourne Stars in the game at that stage of the game. His knock of 48 included five boundaries and a couple of big sixes but it wasn't enough as he well against Jordan. Hilton Cartwright came late to the crease and there wasn't left to be done at that stage of the innings. The pressure was building up and two outstanding overs from Jordan and Ellis meant that the Stars needed to get a massive 24 runs from the final over where they fell short by 7 runs.
Riley Meredith picked up a wicket early on but he was expensive as he went for a few runs. Skipper Nathan Ellis bowled with a big heart and he led from the front picking up two wickets. Veteran Englishman Chris Jordan proved his value yet again as he bowled the tough overs but managed to keep things tight and pick up a wicket.

19.6 Peter Hatzoglou to Beau Webster, SIX RUNS AGAIN! WEBSTER BRINGS UP HIS FIFTY! BUT, THE HURRICANES WIN THIS AND FINISH FIFTH! Good length ball around off-stump. Webster waited for it, kept his eyes on the ball and muscled it well over long-off on the up for a maximum!
19.5 Peter Hatzoglou to Beau Webster, good length googly around leg-stump. Webster went for the hoick over mid-wicket by backing away but missed it! No run.
PETER!!! He pulls it back and gives just a single. The Hurricanes are surely winning this one from here on with 14 runs needed of 2 balls.
19.4 Peter Hatzoglou to Hilton Cartwright, short and slow on off-stump. Powered down to wide long-on off the back foot for a single only! This is a great result for the Hurricanes!
Cartwright has pumped one into the crowd and the hopes are still alive for the Stars. Hatzoglou just missed his line and it was enough for the right hander to make the most of it.
19.3 Peter Hatzoglou to Hilton Cartwright, SIX RUNS! THAT'S MORE LIKE IT! Length ball on middle-stump. Cartwright makes room and slaps it over deep mid-on from the meat of the blade! 15 runs to get off 3 balls!
19.2 Peter Hatzoglou to Hilton Cartwright, good length faster ball on middle-stump. Heaved off the thick inside edge to deep square-leg off the back foot for a couple of runs.
19.1 Peter Hatzoglou to Beau Webster, over the wicket, good length flatter ball on off-stump. Scuffed to mid-wicket from down on one knee for just the single!
Peter Hatzoglou [3.0-0-30-0] comes back into the attack.
Ellis started off the over with a couple of wide balls but he was brilliant in the end as he closed it out and gave away just 8 runs of it. The Hurricanes have run out of their time though and they will need to keep one fielder more inside the circle.
