Commentary

That brings us to the end of our coverage for this match. Somerset climb to the top of the points table with that win and the net run rate boost. Riley Meredith (4/12; Player of the Match): We talked a lot when we were out there. Craig (Overton) bowled the first over and like always he told me what was going on there and what lengths to bowl. The guys are so much experienced and any advice you get is handy. I really wanted to come over and play here for a long time. I was picked in The Hundred a couple years ago but I got injured. So I am glad to be here. The dressing room is a very calm one, no matter what the result. That helps getting in your role.

Lewis Gregory (Somerset Captain): I thought it was a pretty good surface, something in it for the big quicks with some bounce and seam. You kind of want to get into a roll in this format, so hopefully, we can keep this run up. He's a brilliant guy, fitting in really well. Throwing in some rockets and getting us wickets, so yeah he's fit in well. We played on some surfaces at home that had some bounce in them. So, we're a bit used to that and it's nice to have two big quicks out there. They rode their luck a little bit and did a great job of getting us over the line.

Stephen Eskinazi (Middlesex Captain): Incredibly disappointing night. it was the perfect storm. We didn't think the surface would play the way it did. There was some world-class bowling which basically pinched us the game. We'll dust ourselves pretty quickly. We're on the same surface on Thursday night, so we'll have to adapt quickly. I think it's really tricky when you're batting first and trying to assess the wicket. It could be a case of seeing Craig and Meredith off but there's always some games like this in a season. We'll dust ourselves off and get past it. We're trying to play our cricket in a certain way and make our identity in the way we approach the game. You've probably never seen a man happier when the ball is seaming and bouncing around. Leus, if you're watching. We could have done with you out there.

Clinical and comprehensive. The defending champions outplayed the hosts in every aspect of the game. In fact, it is hard to recall if there was anything at all that went in the favour of Middlesex. Right from the coin flip, it was all Somerset.

They won the toss and looking at the overcast conditions, Lewis Gregory made the prompt decision of fielding first. The bowlers repaid the faith. Craig Overton and Riley Meredith bowled the first 8 overs in tandem. They bowled traditional lines and lengths and ended up picking 6 wickets between themselves to rock the Middlesex batting line up. The hosts were guilty of not respecting the conditions and playing too many cross batted shots. Somerset's fielders complimented their bowlers well and were professional with their catching too.

The result seemed like a forgone conclusion at the half way mark. Albeit, Tom Helm ignited some hopes for his team by dismissing Will Smeed early on. But Banton and Kohler-Cadmore got together and ensured that there weren't any more hiccups. Both of them curbed their natural instincts and played watchful knocks to help the visitors home.
