Unfortunately, rain has had the final say and the points will be split between the Thunder and the Sixers in this Sydney Derby. It was always on the cards with the weather around and this has been a letdown for the 20-odd thousand people that had gathered at the SCG for this match. Warner was looking in sublime touch today and he will be the more disappointed of the two skippers as his team will have to now play the knockout against the fourth-ranked team. On the other hand, Sixers will play an away game against the Hurricanes in the Qualifier. But that is for later, we still have a couple of league matches left with a couple of teams vying for the fourth spot. This is it from here, this is Sourabh and Lavil signing off for now, ta-ta!
21:35 Local Time (16:05 IST): We have the official word, rain has its say and the Sydney Derby has been called off due to the incessant showers
21:33 Local Time (16:03 IST): Not much of a positive update, the SCG that was packed earlier has seen the crowds make their way to the gates. It continues to rain and Emma Freedman, who was on air providing the update, says that it continues to pelt down hard
Bharath: "RAIN RAIN GO AWAY DAVID WARNER WANTS TO PLAY"
20:11 Local Time (15:41 IST): A nine over a side contest was on the cards but with rain coming back on with the winds, the wait for cricket seems to have extended a bit
20:58 Local Time (15:28 IST): Some positive news, we have the smaller covers coming off after the rain seems to have stopped. Sooner, we should have the big cover gone off the pitch too
Debasish: "Hoping for a quick start" -- So are we Debasish
20:44 Local Time (15:14 IST): Nothing much to say, rain continues to have its say here at the Sydney Cricket Ground. We are yet to have an idea of how long it would be before we could have a five overs-a-side game
20:28 Local Time (14:58 IST): Absolutely pelting down now
Yash: "Match start in 20 minutes." Wish this could be true, Yash. We are far away from a resumption, unfortunately.
20:15 Local Time (14:45 IST): The rain continues to frustrate. It had almost stopped and the groundsmen were taking the big covers off and just then the intensity increased and now the covers are firmly on. The broadcasters tell us that the rain is coming in in strange ways, the radar is clear but the rain is slanting at angles across SCG with winds up to 60 kmph. Some puddles are starting to form as well, not looking great for now.
20:05 Local Time (14:35 IST): The rain has gotten heavier. The umbrellas are up firmly in the stands and the players are now not hanging around by the boundary lines. This could be a lengthy delay, we will keep you posted.
Shrikant: "What about the rain being frustrating for the viewers? I had some special plans in place for the Sydney Derby." Tell us more, Shrikant.
19:56 Local Time (14:26 IST): The rain has returned and the players are off once more. This is frustrating for the players as well as the crowd which has gathered in large numbers. It is not heavy just like the previous time but enough to stop play. The groundstaff have run out with covers and they are quick to cover the 22-yards. Let's hope it is not a long stoppage.
