Commentary

So Group C finds its first qualifier for the Super-8s and it is the home team, the West Indies! As for New Zealand, they have to thump their opponents in the next two games and hope that Afghanistan lose to Papua New Guinea. But it's a tough ask! Up next though, later on tonight at 8:00 pm IST, is the Netherlands taking on Bangladesh for a really important Group D game. Rovman Powell (West Indies captain): We know it wasn't going to be an easy wicket due to the inclement weather, but then we witnessed a special knock from Sherfane Rutherford! He made sure that those last two overs went out way completely. We have three spinners, we want to use them to the best of their ability and I'm glad they performed to their potential tonight! The crowd has been great. We want to win more matches for the crowd who want to see us do well so appreciably!

Kane Williamson (New Zealand captain): The first spell with the ball was good. We know that it was going to be tough to bat on and it worked out that way with how we bowled. But Sherfane Rutherford played a tremendous knock! Those two overs in end was the difference. I knew that the best option would be to bowl our main bowlers on that wicket out, we did that, but that final couple of overs frustrated us. Conditions are what they are here, we need to keep looking to get better, keep finding a way of getting those extra 10-15 runs. We need to bounce back quickly, with smarter and better performances, it's important we pick ourselves up and go again.

Sherfane Rutherford is the Player of the Match, here is what he had to say: Ohh was looking forward to the opportunity and happy that it came off today. You know I was in IPL for two months. Even though I wasn't playing I was planning for this. Backing my skills was the key today. Well I was telling myself to take it deep. Me and Sammy had a chat and I felt the deeper we go I had a chance to make up in the end. Looking at the bowling line up I knew they were short by two overs and I knew I can score maximum runs if I take it deep. Well it's one box getting ticked but it's just the start of hopefully something big for us. Chicken curry tonight (chuckles on what we would have tonight)

The last two overs of the first innings went for 37 runs. And that turned out to be the difference! New Zealand tried hard, they fought till the end, but needed at least three more boundaries to make things interesting, if not win!

The regular fall of wickets right from the start did not help the Blackcaps. The lack of partnerships and a 5-over period without even 6 RPO till the first 15 overs made things way more difficult for the batters to do something about the chase in the final five.

Both left-arm spinners, Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, were excellent both in terms of economy and wickets. And then came the four overs of Alzarri Joseph that saw four wickets fall, with only 19 runs given away!

Glenn Phillips and Mitchell Santner did try to make a case for their team, but it was all too late. The batters before them had to step up, one of them had to go on and get a 30 or 40 or 50, but that did not happen. As a result, even with dew on the ground, the tricky pitch for batting never came to their aid.

The West Indies were shabby in the field too, but the relentless bowling and those last two overs of the first innings turned things around, big time! With this win, they become the first team from Group C to qualify for the Super-8s.

New Zealand have to win their next two matches of course, and do so handsomely but will need Afghanistan to lose against Papua New Guinea, which looks quite unlikely.
