Will Elijah Mitchell be cut by the 49ers before August is out?

The San Francisco 49ers are looking to add another Super Bowl title to their collection – their sixth overall and first in the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch era. To achieve that feat, they have kept most of their All-Pros and Pro Bowlers on the roster, from quarterback Brock Purdy to safety Talanoa Hufanga.

But not everyone will be on board when that quest begins on Sept. 9 against the New York Jets. Here's a closer look at three candidates who could be cut from the 49ers roster ahead of the NFL training camp.

Tight end Eric Saubert has been hopping around various teams throughout his career. Ever since he was drafted in the fifth round by the Atlanta Falcons in 2017, he has played for nine teams.

The 49ers represent his 10th, but it is hard to see him breaking through and surpassing George Kittle and Logan Thomas in the rotation. Even at third-stringer, 2023 draftees Cameron Lato and Brayden Willis possibly show more upside than him.

#2. Isaac Yiadom

Isaac Yiadom was decent with the New Orleans Saints in the 2023-24 NFL season, starting almost half the season and notching 37 tackles (25 solo), 14 pass breakups and an interception and fumble recovery each. The Saints managed to go 9-8, just missing the playoffs via tiebreak.

What puts him on the cutting block, though, is the depth of the 49ers' secondary. Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir are expected to start in the corners, with former Baltimore Raven Rock Ya-Sin expected to be the main reliever.

Furthermore, moving him farther back to safety may not be an option either. While Talanoa Hufanga heals his knee, George Odum will likely have the strong side on lockdown. The free side could rest on Ji'Ayir Brown, with Malik Mustapha to back him up.

#1. Elijah Mitchell

What a downfall it has been for Elijah Mitchell.

Back in 2021, he was thought to be the next great running back to emanate from Santa Clara, rushing for 963 yards and five touchdowns. And then he hurt his MCL as a sophomore. Initially just spraining that muscle, he would subsequently tear it later.

But it was not just the injury that halted his progress. During his absence, the 49ers traded for Christian McCaffrey, who surpassed him as the starter. And now, Mitchell is being threatened by Jordan Mason, who has been showing increasing progress since joining in 2022 as a UDFA.
