The New York Jets have a lot of thinking to do during the 2025 offseason. They expected to be major competitors in the AFC, and to end the NFL's longest playoff drought, which started in 2010. After all, this was finally the year where Aaron Rodgers would be healthy to play for them.
However, the season quickly unraveled and things took a turn for the worse. After a 2-1 start, their problems mounted. Head coach Robert Saleh was fired after Week 5, general manager Joe Douglas was fired shortly after, and the year was finished before December, amidst a lot of turmoil.
Check out three things that Woody Johnson should focus on to get his franchise back on track for the upcoming year.
3 things that Woody Johnson should do in 2025 to get the Jets back on track
#3 - Rejuvenate the roster
The Jets had one of the oldest rosters in the league in 2024, with an average of 26.5 years at their initial 53-man roster. While there are teams with an older roster average, such as the Miami Dolphins (27.3), a quick look at their star players makes it clear that they're mostly veterans.

Aaron Rodgers, Allen Lazard, Davante Adams, Morgan Moses, Tyron Smith, D.J. Reed, Haason Reddick, C.J. Mosley and the list goes on. Apart from Adams, acquired during a midseason trade, all of those players underperformed in 2024, albeit for different reasons. It's time to focus on younger talent.
#2 - Get rid of Aaron Rodgers
Speaking of Rodgers, the past two years have been a tragedy. The quarterback got hurt in his first year, but evoked the unattainable idea of still returning in 2023 for absolutely no reason. When he did play, in 2024, it was clear that he was far from his prime.
Rodgers has been a distraction, and his play does not justify all the headaches. The owner wanted to bench him after an early season loss, and even though they created lots of expectations following his arrival, his performance, his salary and his personality is something that New York doesn't need.
#1 - Hire a culture-changer head coach
After over a decade without a single playoff appearance, all kinds of problems have appeared at the Jets. They did have some positive seasons, such as the 10-6 achieved in 2015, but the finish line feels more distant than ever.
The current iteration of this roster did not work, and they'll enter another rebuild process with a new head coach and a new general manager. Instead of focusing on assistants with bigger knowledge on one side of the ball (such as Saleh), they should look to hire a new head coach who would send shockwaves through the entire franchise.
The Lions chose this formula with Dan Campbell and the results have been incredible. With Mike Vrabel available, his style should make him a great candidate for the Jets.
