3 NFL superteams who might miss playoffs in 2023

Each NFL season features its own set of shocking results. This includes certain teams that far exceed expectations, while others completely fail to meet them. It often seems as if the teams who were extremely successful one year will continue to do so the following season, but that's not always the case. Many examples disprove this concept.

The most recent example is the Los Angeles Rams. They were victorious in Super Bowl LVI and followed it up by failing to reach the NFL Playoffs next season.

This happened despite the Rams returning most of their key players. Each year is unique and the 2023 NFL season will likely follow the trend. Here are three of the best current teams who may just miss out on the postseason in 2023.

#1 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have appeared in the NFL Playoffs in all three years since Tom Brady joined the team in 2020. They also won a Super Bowl ring. The issue is, he's likely not going to be there for the 2023 NFL season unless he unretires and signs a new contract to return with them. Both scenarios seem unlikely.

The Buccaneers have one of the most loaded rosters from top to bottom in the entire league. But without a legitimate quarterback, it's extremely difficult to make it to the postseason. Their outlook for 2023 will heavily depend upon who is lining up under centre. Pretty much anyone other than Tom Brady is a step backwards.

#2 - San Francisco 49ers

All reports indicate that the San Francisco 49ers will move forward with one of their two young quarterbacks as their starter. The issue is that Brock Purdy is coming off a major injury to his throwing arm, while Trey Lance is completely unproven in the NFL. There's no guarantee that either of them will work out.

There seems to be a belief around the NFL that the 49ers are so talented that esteemed head coach Kyle Shanahan could find success no matter who plays quarterback. His history suggests otherwise.

In 2018 and 2020, when Jimmy Garoppolo suffered major injuries that kept him out for most of the year, the 49ers combined for a disappointing 10-22 record.

#3 - Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are coming off an appearance in Super Bowl LVII, where they were narrowly defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs. Jalen Hurts was spectacular in the losing effort, outplaying MVP Patrick Mahomes.

Hurts' incredible performance this year has led to many reports indicating that he will receive a massive contract extension from the Eagles. While this is great news for his future, it could spell trouble for the rest of their roster.

Their depth across the board is what made them so dominant in 2022. After paying Hurts, they will have to sacrifice some of it for salary cap management. This could lead to regression.
