The top-tier players in the NFL focus on consistency going into every single season. That is why they're considered the very best at their position. Being able to perform consistently is what separates elite players from average ones.
Wide receivers such as Justin Jefferson and Davante Adams have had no issues in being consistent, as they're always ranked at the top in terms of yards and touchdowns at the end of each year.
However, occasionally we see wide receivers having a flash-in-the-pan campaign, where they put up outstanding numbers for a single season before going back to being distinctly average. Here are five NFL wide receivers who belong to this category.

When the Buccaneers drafted wide receiver Michael Clayton back in 2004, they must have thought they'd struck gold. Clayton had seven touchdowns and over 1,250 yards during an outstanding rookie campaign. However, that was as good as it got for him in the NFL.
Clayton struggled with injuries throughout the rest of his career and never surpassed 500 receiving yards again.
#4 - Sidney Rice

The Minnesota Vikings invested a second-round pick on wide receiver Sidney Rice in 2007. Before the 2009 season, Rice had never amassed more than 396 yards, but all would change when Brett Favre rolled into Minnesota. Rice became a favorite target of Favre's as he ended the season with 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns, being voted to his only Pro Bowl.
Rice never eclipsed his 2009 season, never topping 750 yards and seven touchdowns again.
#3 - Patrick Jeffers

Primarily a special teamer, Patrick Jeffers had an outstanding breakout campaign back in 1999.
Jeffers had never topped over 330 yards in a season but had 1,082 yards with the Carolina Panthers in '99. He also had 12 touchdowns, tied for the most in the league that year. Jeffers had five straight 100-yard games and set the Panthers' franchise record for yards per reception with 17.2
However, Jeffers tore his ACL before the beginning of the following season and never recovered. He returned for one year in 2001 but could only amass 127 receiving yards before retiring.
#2 - Terrelle Pryor
![Cleveland Browns WR Terrelle Pryor](https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2023/05/c1796-16848672858304-1920.jpg?w=190 190w, https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2023/05/c1796-16848672858304-1920.jpg?w=720 720w, https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2023/05/c1796-16848672858304-1920.jpg?w=640 640w, https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2023/05/c1796-16848672858304-1920.jpg?w=1045 1045w, https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2023/05/c1796-16848672858304-1920.jpg?w=1200 1200w, https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2023/05/c1796-16848672858304-1920.jpg?w=1460 1460w, https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2023/05/c1796-16848672858304-1920.jpg?w=1600 1600w, https://staticg.sportskeeda.com/editor/2023/05/c1796-16848672858304-1920.jpg 1920w)
Terrelle Pryor entered the NFL with the Oakland Raiders as a quarterback in 2011. However, his most impressive campaign came as a wide receiver with the Cleveland Browns in 2015.
Pryor wound up with 1,007 yards and four touchdowns, made all the more impressive due to his lack of experience at the position. This also came on a terrible Browns team that ended 1-15, but Pryor would never reach those heights again. He only played two more seasons, never topping 300 yards as injuries took their toll.
#1 - Allen Hurns

The Jacksonville Jaguars struck gold when they picked up Allen Hurns as an undrafted free agent in 2014. Hurns had over 600 yards during his rookie campaign and followed that up by topping 1,000 yards and combining that with 10 touchdowns. Alongside Allen Robinson, Hurns combined for one of the best tandems in the NFL, but it wouldn't last.
The Jaguars paid Hurns $40m over four years but would regret that deal as he failed to total 1,000 yards over his final two seasons with the team. Hurns bounced around the NFL, landing in Dallas and Miami, but he never topped 500 yards again in a season.
