Acrisure Stadium History

The home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Acrisure Stadium was earlier called the “Heinz Field” when it was first inaugurated in the year 2001. The American food processing company H. J. Heinz Company acquired the naming rights for the facility before the stadium’s inception for $57 million until 2021.

The stadium retained the name Heinz Field despite the merger between Kraft Foods and H.J. Heinz in the year 2015. However in 2022, after extending the naming rights for another year, Kraft-Heinz ended the 21-year partnership with the Steeler by not signing the new deal.

Shortly after, Acrisure, a Michigan-based insurance company acquired the naming rights for the stadium, which was reported to be over $150 million.

The Pittsburgh Steelers played their first-ever game in the Acrisure Stadium (then Heinz Field) in the year 2001, resulting in a 20-7 preseason loss to the Detroit Lions.

While the Steelers were set to play their first regular season game on 16 September 2001, the match was postponed due to the “9/11 attacks.” This resulted in them taking on the Cincinnati Bengals the next month on October 7, when the Steelers triumphed over the opponent 16–7.

Through the years, the Acrisure Stadium has been a huge advantage for the Steelers’ dominance in the NFL. The franchise has a record of 127-50-2 in the facility since its opening in 2001.

Acrisure Stadium Construction and Cost

Before the construction of the Acrisure Stadium (then Heinz Field), the Pittsburgh Steelers played in the Three Rivers Stadium from the year 1970 to 2000. This was also the home of MLB team Pittsburgh Pirates, with whom they shared the facility.

The Steelers began thinking about having a full-time football stadium when the Pirates discussed building a full-time baseball park. This move was essential for the Steelers to attract new players since the remaining teams in the division also had built full-time football stadiums.

The publicly owned Acrisure Stadium cost $281 million to build in 2001. The design for the stadium was led by the famous American architecture firm HOK Sport. The inspiration behind the design came from the owners, the Rooney family, who wanted to take into account the rich history of Pittsburgh and also have a futuristic element of where the city is headed.

Hence the stadium was built with steel both structurally and externally. The inspiration to use glass in the design of the stadium was from the modern building in the city, giving an aesthetically pleasing view. Apart from the HOK Sport also used artificial stone in the design to reduce costs.

After breaking ground on 18 June 1999, the Heinz Field (now Acrisure Stadium) was inaugurated on 18 August 2001. 1400 people were employed over the course of this period to build this facility by the Hunt Construction Group and Mascaro Construction Company, LP.
