Alex Smith is a professional American Footballer who plays in the National Football League (NFL) as a quarterback and was selected by the San Francisco 49ers as the first overall pick of the 2005 NFL draft.

He signed a deal of six years worth $49.5 million with the San Francisco 49ers and in his rookie season, he played in nine games recording just one touchdown pass. In the 2005 season, he was working to improve his technique and in the first three games, he recorded three touchdowns, no interceptions, and collected 814 yards. In 2006 in a game against the Minnesota Vikings, he met Joe Montana for the first time as the 49ers won 9-3. At the end of the 2007 season, Smith was placed on the Injury reserve list to receive surgery on the shoulder. The 49ers were going to release Smith before the 2009 season but after the head coach was changed the team showed interest in keeping him for the 2009 season but had to restructure his contract.

In the 2011 season, he signed a one-year deal worth $5 million with the 49ers and in the NFC Divisional Round of the playoffs in a dramatic game against the New Orleans Saints Smith made key throws and a rushing touchdown as the 49ers won 36-32. He won the Ed Block Courage Award and was named to the USA Today All-Joe Team because of his performance. In the 2013 season, he signed a deal of three years worth $24 million with the 49ers and after performing well all through the season he ranked third in the NFL in passer rating. In 2013 the 49ers traded Smith to the Kansas City Chiefs he won his first nine regular-season starts and was named to his first Pro Bowl.

In the 2014 season, he signed a deal for four extra years with the Chiefs and played in 15 games. In the Wild Card Round in a game against the Houston Texans, he helped his team win 30-0. In the 2017 season, season opener Smith finished with 368 passing yards and four touchdowns as the Chiefs won a 42–27 road game against the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots. In 2018 the Chiefs traded Smith to the Washington Redskins. During a game against the Houston Texans on November 18, 2018, Smith suffered a spiral and compound fracture to his tibia and fibula in his right leg, and in 2020 in a game against the Rams, he came back after 2 years and was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He retired from the NFL on April 19, 2021.
