Dynamite at the running back position, Alvin Kamara has revolutionized the position. Although he has yet to reach 1,000 rushing yards in a season, Kamara is not just a one-dimension player. Playing for the New Orleans Saints, he has been used superbly as a receiver also. This has given the team much more flexibility on the offense and with the way Kamara can dodge tackles, he has been excellent in picking up excess yards after the reception.
However, Kamara has had a bit of an issue when it comes to his behavior. Turning our attention to his college days, Alvin had had an excellent reputation as a running back. With strong performances for his high school in his junior and senior years, he was considered one of the top running backs in the country.
Post high school, he joined the University of Alabama and was well on his way to stardom. That is until he was banned from practicing with the team and suspended from a bowl game on account of behavior problems. As a result, Kamara’s on-field and off-field issues have roots in his past. So, what did Alvin Kamara do even though he has become a big star in the NFL?
What has Alvin Kamara done?
In a shocking incident that took place in early February 2023, Alvin Kamara was arrested by the Las Vegas police just after his Pro Bowl game. Apparently, Kamara, in town for the game, was at a bar in Vegas with some of his friends when the incident occurred.
The victim, Darnell Greene who was recovering at Sunrise hospital told the police that he was leaving Drai’s NightClub and as he was stepping onto the elevator with a large group next to him, one person put his hand on his chest preventing him from entering. When Greene pushed the man’s hand away, he was attacked by several people including Alvin Kamara as video surveillance caught all that went on. Greene further stated that he was punched and kicked multiple times by the group and suffered an eye injury.
Greene was able to identify Kamara by his looks and the clothes that he wore. After questioning Kamara and studying the video evidence, Kamara was found to be guilty of the charge. He was later ordered to pay a compensation amount of approximately $105,196 for the victim’s medical expenses and was also fined $500 along with 30 hours of community service. On August 4, 2023, the NFL handed down a three-game suspension to Kamara for his actions which means he will have to sit out the first three games of the 2023 season.
How has Alvin Kamara handled the situation?
In the aftermath that took place, Kamara did not try to dodge the situation. He has publicly accepted his wrongdoing and has been highly supportive of resolving the case the right way. After meeting with Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, he acknowledged the incident and owned up to his mistake which may have helped him get a reduced suspension which otherwise is up to six games generally.
While speaking with the media also, Kamara has accepted that he was at fault and that he knows he has embarrassed not only himself and his family but also the team and the Saints franchise as a whole. He further added that he doesn't want to be part of something like this again where somebody gets hurt or severely injured, and what happened was a bad decision on his part, but he will not shy away from accepting his mistake.
Going forward, one can hope that Kamara will concentrate only on his football and put this unfortunate episode behind him. Also, it would be in his best interest to check his behavior in the future so as to avoid any further damage to any citizen, or to himself for that matter. It would be quite a shame if one of this era’s most exciting running backs keeps landing in trouble and tarnishes a legacy he is trying hard to build.
