Alvin Kamara sustained a groin injury during the New Orleans Saints' Week 15 matchup with the Washington Commanders. According to some reports, the star running back is unlikely to play again this season given the time in the season the injury occurred and the fact that New Orleans has been knocked out of postseason contention.

Teams sometimes shut down their key players for the remainder of the season when they don't have too much to play for and don't want to risk endangering their health.

We may still see Kamara before the season ends, though, as the eighth-year running back is on the verge of achieving 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in his career and his injury isn't said to be significant.

Kamara's injury is a groin abductor sort of problem, according to interim head coach Darren Rizzi on Monday, and he will continue to undergo testing. However, Rizzi stated he would not make a medical pronouncement when asked if it was a major issue.

Some reports state that the 29-year-old running back has already undergone a groin MRI, is awaiting results, and should be considered day-to-day going ahead.

The Saints' next practice is scheduled for Thursday, when they will begin getting ready for their game against the Green Bay Packers on Monday. By then, Kamara's status should become clearer.

Despite dealing with a broken hand and fractured ribs at different points this season, Kamara has played in all 14 of the Saints' games. His 228 rushing attempts have resulted in 950 yards and six touchdowns. In addition, he has scored two receiving touchdowns and 68 receptions for 543 yards.

Kendre Miller and Jamaal Williams are two other running backs New Orleans can call on besides Kamara. Miller will probably take over the brunt of the responsibilities in the Saints' backfield if Kamara is sidelined for an extended period of time because of his groin issue.

Alvin Kamara's injury update: What happened to the Saints RB?

Alvin Kamara wasn't even involved on the play that resulted in his groin injury against the Washington Commanders last weekend. After suffering a groin strain during the third quarter of that game, he initially went to the medical tent and then to the locker room. He was deemed questionable to return to the field, but he eventually couldn't.

After catching a 21-yard touchdown throw earlier in the game, Kamara joined Christian McCaffrey, Marshall Faulk and Lenny Moore as the only NFL players with at least 50 rushing touchdowns and at least 25 receiving touchdowns. Shortly afterward, he suffered the injury and couldn't continue.

Prior to his departure from the Week 15 game, Kamara had recorded four receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown to go with five rushes for 12 yards.
