Amari Cooper is an American Football wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills. The 6 ft 1 in wideout was taken 4th overall in the 2015 NFL draft by the Oakland Raiders (now Las Vegas Raiders). The Miami native has been a pro bowler five times in his first nine seasons as a pro. He was an honorable mention in the top 10 wide receivers survey by ESPN in July 2024 where various executives, scouts, and coaches gave their rankings. Cooper attended the University of Alabama and played for them from 2012 up until 2014. He was named to the All-American team once and was the 2014 SEC Offensive Player of the Year. Cooper also finished 3rd in voting when it came to the Heisman Trophy which is one of the most prestigious awards in college football. Cooper finished his three-year college career with 3,463 receiving yards, 31 receiving touchdowns, 228 receptions, and 15.2 receiving yards per reception.
As a freshman in 2012, he quickly made his mark, playing in all 14 games and starting in the final nine. He led the team with 59 catches for 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns, breaking Alabama's long-standing record for touchdowns and surpassing Julio Jones's freshman records for receptions and yards. He performed well in important games including the SEC Championship, where he scored the decisive touchdown against Georgia, and the BCS National Championship, where he led Alabama with two touchdowns in their win over Notre Dame. He earned Freshman All-American honors for his performance.
In his sophomore year (2013), Cooper faced injury and missed two games, recording 45 catches for 736 yards and four touchdowns. His best game came in the Iron Bowl against Auburn, where he set a school record with a 99-yard touchdown reception. As a junior in 2014, Cooper broke several records, including Alabama’s single-season receiving yards with 1,727 and receptions with 124. He also set SEC records and became Alabama’s all-time leader in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. He earned the Biletnikoff Award and a spot as a unanimous All-American.
