When it comes to the former Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, there are two things that come to mind. The first one being his fiery red hair, and the second one being the mixed two halves of a career that he has had up until this point at least. When he first entered the league in 2011, he combined with fellow rookie wide receiver A.J. Green to lead the Bengals into the playoffs.
As a football player, Dalton brings excellent leadership qualities to the table. In addition to this, his decade-plus experience at the highest level adds value to any team he suits up for. Dalton is the type of person who can fire up teammates both on and off the field. Furthermore, he possesses a very strong arm due to which he has been given the nickname ‘Red Rifle’.
What team is Andy Dalton on
As of August 2024, Andy Dalton is with the Carolina Panthers. He signed a two year deal worth $10 million in 2023 to fill in the backup quarterback role behind 2023 number one pick Bryce Young. Even after the coaching change in 2024, Dalton still provides the Panthers with an able and experienced backup who can mentor their second-year signal caller with all the experience he has accumulated over his thirteen year career so far.
Andy Dalton NFL career
Andy Dalton started his career in the NFL with the Bengals when they drafted him in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. At the time he was drafted, the Bengals were going through a rough patch especially since starting quarterback Carson Palmer demanded a trade.
Thrust into the starting role since his rookie season, Dalton was instrumental in leading the franchise to five consecutive years in the postseason. Unfortunately, though, his good play during the regular season never translated into the playoffs as the Bengals could never get past the Wild Card round. Dalton himself was much of the problem as his numbers dropped significantly after the regular season. Furthermore, in four playoff games over four years, he only had 1 touchdown whereas he threw 6 interceptions.
From 2016 onwards, the Bengals started losing more and more games with Dalton leading the charge, but he was still given many chances in the following four years. Finally, in 2020, the Bengals signed Joe Burrow who they saw as their future and released Dalton to make room for the salary cap.
Moving on to the Dallas Cowboys, he signed a one year contract for the 2020 season as a backup to Dak Prescott. Due to an injury-riddled season for Prescott, Dalton got to see a lot of game time playing in 11 games and starting 9 of them. However, by this point, he had begun to falter and couldn’t make the most of his opportunity.
In 2021, he signed a one year deal with the Chicago Bears where he was given the starting job. However, he lost the job just after the initial two games he suffered an injury and then lost his job to upcoming star Justin Fields. He played a few more games in the season after Fields also got injured but once again failed to live up to the standards expected of him.
In another move, Dalton then signed his third one year contract with the New Orleans Saints as a starter. He played in 14 games, starting all of them but went 6-8 on the year. Not able to justify a contract extension, Dalton has now signed with the Panthers where he will look to resurrect his career for the next couple of years.
