Most die-hard NFL fans have probably known about Andy Reid and how great of a coach he has been for many years by now. Having spent over two decades in the game as a head coach for two struggling franchises and turning them into Super Bowl-contending teams is not an effort that goes unnoticed. Yet, even for the casual fans of the game who may not have known much about Reid until recently, it is now safe to say that outside of the players, Reid may be one of the most well-known personalities in the league after taking three Super Bowls home with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Of course, there is a lot about Andy Reid that is evident on the field. He is a master tactician and always has something unique up his sleeve. He is considered by many media personalities and players alike as one of the best offensive minds of the 21st century. But knowing about his family life off the field is not that common. In this article we will take a better look at Andy Reid’s children and what they do.
Andy Reid Sons
Andy Reid had 3 sons- Garrett, Britt, and Spencer Reid. He and his wife Tammy were proud parents to five children, including three sons and two daughters. Being a football coach, Reid and his wife moved around quite a bit in his early years and interestingly had all five kids in a different state. The couple’s firstborn was son Garrett, who was then followed by their second son Britt, then two daughters Crosby and Drew Ann, and finally their last son Spencer.
All three of Reid’s sons followed in their father’s footsteps and chose to carve out a career in football. The youngest son Spencer was away from the public eye for most of his life. He however recently joined his father with the Chiefs as an assistant strength and conditioning coach having worked in the field at BYU earlier and is in his 2nd season with the Chiefs in 2024 (via Chiefs.com).
Apart from that, Reid’s daughters and youngest son Spencer have not been visible in the media as much as their eldest siblings. Unfortunately, though, both Garrett and Britt have made news in the media and public for the wrong reasons.
Garrett Reid
Born in 1983 in Utah, Garrett Reid was the firstborn son of Andy Reid. Following his father, Garrett joined the Philadelphia Eagles as an unofficial strength and conditioning coach working under Reid himself.
Garrett was however a struggling drug addict and had been struggling for many years with the addiction. On the morning of 5th August 2012, Garrett was found dead while he was in his room at the Eagles training camp in Pennsylvania. (via ESPN)
A few years earlier in 2007, Garrett was also imprisoned for a car crash caused by high speeding. The crash resulted in another driver being injured. During the investigation, police found heroin and more than 200 pills in Garrett's car. Garrett was more or less spoiled to the degree that he even admitted to a judge that he got a thrill out of selling drugs. He felt on top of the world as a rich kid who could go anywhere and command respect for his position as the son of an NFL team’s head coach. (via ESPN)
Later on at his hearing, Garrett told the judge that he didn’t want this life and that he didn’t want to die doing drugs. He wanted to change his perception of being the rich kid of a top-level coach and upon release, he seemed to be getting his life back on track. Eventually, his death was ruled as an accidental heroin overdose.
Britt Reid
Andy Reid’s second-born and second son Britt also followed his father and brother into football. He also became a coach under his father in Kansas City starting as a Defensive Quality Control Coach in 2013. Working his way up the ladder, he then went on to become the Defensive Line Coach from 2016 to 2018, and the Linebackers/outside linebackers Coach until 2020. He was a big part of the team’s Super Bowl win in 2020 in his capacity as the linebackers coach.
While everything looked to be on track and things for Britt were looking much different than that of his brother Garrett, he still had a past connecting him to his share of bad times. In 2007 the same day Garrett was imprisoned, Britt was also arrested for a road rage situation. Britt also had a problem with drugs and the police found both weapons and drugs in his car as well.
Fast forward to 2021, the Chiefs were again in the Super Bowl having won the AFC Championship game. But this time there would be no return for Britt as he was arrested following a car accident in which his truck was speeding approximately 20 mph over the limit and he rammed into two cars that had stopped on the I-435 near Arrowhead Stadium.
The crash was so severe that it left a young five-year-old girl in one of the other cars with a serious brain injury putting her in a coma for 11 days and in the hospital for two months. Luckily the girl survived but when the police arrested Britt, they found that he was not only speeding excessively, but that he was also under the influence of alcohol. As of September 2024, Britt is serving out the remainder of a three-year prison sentence under house arrest after the governor of Missouri commuted Reid's sentence on March 1, 2024. (via ESPN)
Spencer Reid
Spencer Reid is an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the Kansas City Chiefs as of January 2025. He was also strength and conditioning coach at BYU before joining the Chiefs in the 2023 season (via Chiefs.com).
