The Indianapolis Colts are dealing with an all-too-familiar situation with Anthony Richardson, as their young quarterback is once again injured after just a few weeks of play. He had to leave the Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first half and did not return.
Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco took over and led the team to an impressive win over a strong Steelers defense - and Pittsburgh was still undefeated. The most staggering thing at that point was how fluid the Colts' offense looked with Flacco under center, unlike Richardson.
Anthony Richardson Injury Update: What happened to Colts QB?
But it seems that Indianapolis got lucky this time. According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, Richardson is considered day-to-day with oblique and abdominal strains and, perhaps most importantly, is considered likely to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5, which would be a small miracle for the franchise.

Even though Flacco is high in NFL circles, mainly because of how he played with the Cleveland Browns late in the 2023 season, if Richardson is healthy, he's going to play. The Colts know that this is the only way he can develop – his potential is massive, but he needs more reps.
He also needs to learn how to protect himself better. He's not as physically dominant to other players as he was in college, and he's putting himself in many risky situations. Injuries have hampered his progress and he needs to be smarter at this specific point.
How much is Colts QB Anthony Richardson similar to Cam Newton?
The two former Florida quarterbacks are similar in many areas. While athleticism is the first one that comes to mind, their play style and the fact that both played for Florida (although Cam Newton transferred to Auburn later in his college career) provide an interesting comparison.
Having a good athletic profile can cut you a lot of flack in the league, especially as it relates to things such as completing passes in short windows or escaping the pocket to get yards on the move.
These are two things that Newton was excellent at, and the Indianapolis Colts sophomore can become a great quarterback with the same playing style. However, he does need to improve. One thing is to not have experience, especially as he played just 13 games in college. But that's not an excuse that can last forever in the NFL.
