Arthur William Smith is an American football head coach. He is serving as the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons in the National Football League (NFL).

Arthur Smith was an athlete during his career as a student. After his college career, he switched to being a football coach. He has coached for three different NFL teams in his career so far. He is notable for spending the majority of his time with the Tennessee Titans and developing as a coach there. After being appointed as the head coach, Arthur Smith has continued to show his coaching skills and improve Atlanta Falcons as a team. Arthur Smith has received praise for his coaching skills and how he inspires the players especially his play-calling skills.

Washington Redskins

This is where Arthur Smith made his NFL debut. He joined the team in 2007 as a defensive quality control coach under Joe Gibbs. Besides improving the defense portion of the team, he also worked as an assistant college scout in Washington. After spending one season with the team, he departed from it in 2008.

Ole Miss (College)

Arthur Smith’s next stop in his coaching career was at Ole Miss. He joined in 2010 and worked with the linebackers of the team despite being hired as an administrative assistant and defensive intern. He stayed with them for the year and then departed in 2011.

Tennessee Titans

Arthur Smith next joined the Tennessee Titans in 2011 as a defensive quality control coach under Mike Munchak. He also worked as the offensive assistant and quality control coach in 2012 and assistant tight ends coach in 2015. He finally became the tight ends coach and remained in that position until 2018.

During the 2019 NFL season, Arthur Smith coached and developed players like Ryan Tannehill, Derrick Henry and Jonnu Smith. All three of these players had one of the best years of their career in 2019. Furthermore, the team led the NFL in red zone efficiency with 75.6%, was 3rd in rushing offense with 138.9 yards per game and 4th in yards per play with 6.12 yards. The team also appeared in their first AFC Championship Game in 17 years. Ryan Tannehill and Derrick Henry were also the 4th teammates to lead the NFL in rushing yards and passer rating.

Arthur Smith also coached and developed A.J. Brown gave a rebirth to the career of Ryan Tannehill during his tenure with the team. He also brought out the offensive qualities of Derrick Henry in the games. Under his coaching and guidance, the Tennessee Titans were the best in the red zone of the league in the 2019 and 2020 NFL seasons. He departed from the team after the 2020 NFL season.

Atlanta Falcons

Arthur Smith became the head coach for the first time when he joined the Atlanta Falcons in 2021. In his first session as the head coach, he led the team to post a win-loss record of 7-10. Additionally, he coached and improved tight end Kyle Pitts who passed 1000 rushing yards in the history of the NFL and joined Hall of Famer Mike Ditka. He was also the first rookie to be chosen to the Pro Bowl since Jeremy Shockey in 2002. The team ended up being 3rd in the NFC South and failed to qualify in the playoffs.

Arthur Smith’s second year as a head coach saw the team post a win-loss record of 7-10 and again missing the playoffs. He hopes to go into the playoffs and win the Super Bowl with the team in 2023.
