The Washington Commanders activated Austin Ekeler's 21-day practice window on Wednesday, as reported by Ian Rapoport. This marks a potential return for the running back who has missed four games due to his second concussion of the season.

Ekeler suffered the injury during Week 12's matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The severity of the concussion became apparent when he experienced memory loss and headaches that persisted almost a week after the collision. These symptoms underscored the importance of the NFL's concussion protocols and the Commander's patient approach to his recovery.

Coach Dan Quinn's recent update brought optimism to Commanders fans. The veteran running back participated in team meetings and individual workouts, showing significant progress in his recovery journey.

"Absolutely possible. Austin is definitely trending in the right direction. Workouts are going great. He's in meetings; he's doing all the stuff with us," Quinn told USA Today Sports on 25th Dec.

Before his injury, Ekeler proved invaluable to rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels' development. The versatile back accumulated 355 rushing yards at 4.8 yards per carry and four touchdowns while adding 33 receptions for 346 yards through 11 games.

Speaking on "Grant and Danny" at 106.7 The Fan on Tuesday, Austin Ekeler addressed his recovery status.

"Hurdles have been cleared, but you have to make sure the independent neurologists are taking their time and doing due diligence," he said.

The Commanders could clinch their playoff spot by defeating the Atlanta Falcons this weekend. This scenario might allow them to rest starters in Week 18 against Dallas. This gives Austin Ekeler additional recovery time before a potential wildcard matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The timing of Ekeler's return carries extra weight with receivers Noah Brown and Dyami Brown sidelined. His presence could provide Daniels a reliable outlet during crucial playoff moments. However, the team maintains that his health remains the top priority, leaving his postseason availability dependent on clearing all medical protocols.
