Baker Mayfield played for Texas Tech Raiders and Oklahoma Sooners during his collegiate career.
Baker Mayfield is the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as of the 2024 NFL season. He was the former number-one overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. Mayfield was born in Austin, Texas on April 14, 1995, and attended Lake Travis High School where he played quarterback for the Lake Travis Cavaliers football team.
Mayfield’s football story is one of several ups and downs. He has seen the highest of highs, especially in his college career and he has also seen the lowest of lows, mostly in the National Football League. But his roller coaster of a ride came to an end on March 2024, when Tampa gave him a 3-year deal worth $100 million. Entering his seventh season in the league, it is safe to say he has found a home in Tampa. He has started the 2024 season where he left off in 2023, passing for 24 touchdowns to just 9 interceptions through the first 11 games into the season.

Baker Mayfield came out of high school having played some of the nation’s best football. He finished his high school football career with 6,255 passing yards and threw 67 touchdowns against just 8 interceptions. Mayfield attended Texas Tech University where he was named the backup quarterback for the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team. Despite being a backup, he got his chance just before the start of the new college football season as the Red Raiders then starting quarterback got injured. Making the most of the opportunity, Mayfield led the team to a 5-2 record in 7 games and put up decent numbers along the way. He even won the Big 12 Conference Freshman Offensive Player of the Year for the 2013 season. Despite this, the Red Raiders still were not convinced that Mayfield would be their starter for the upcoming season. Due to the lack of faith shown in him by Texas Tech, he decided to transfer schools after just his true freshman year.
Therefore, in 2014, Mayfield transferred to the University of Oklahoma to play for the Oklahoma Sooners football team. But there was only one problem, he was forced to sit out the entire 2014 campaign due to the Big 12 Conference transfer rules. He also lost one full year of eligibility. In the next three years at Oklahoma, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signal caller led the Sooners to an 11-2 record each year. In 2015, he threw for 3,700 yards, 36 touchdowns, and only 7 interceptions. The following year, he threw for 3,965 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. And in his final year, he had 4,627 passing yards along with 43 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions.
These off-the-chart stats earned him fourth place and third place respectively in the 2015 and 2016 Heisman Trophy voting. He capped off his college career by winning the award in 2017. Along with the Heisman Trophy, he has also won a plethora of awards and accolades in his college career.
Baker Mayfield NFL
With an outstanding college career, Mayfield was selected as the number one overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft by the struggling Cleveland Browns. The Browns fan base saw this as a potentially great move that would get their beloved franchise back on track. However, in his four years with the Browns, Mayfield could only lead them to the postseason once.
With a 29-30 record in his four seasons, and just the one Wild Card Round victory to show for it, Mayfield requested a trade before the 2022 NFL season. As a result, he was traded to the Carolina Panthers but that stint also did not go well. In his six starts with the Panthers, he went 1-5 and had as many interceptions as touchdowns with 6. He then requested to be released and was immediately picked up by the Los Angeles Rams for the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, his 4 starts with the Rams resulted in a 1-3 record and he became a free agent ahead of the 2023 NFL season.
That brings us to the 2023 NFL season, where Mayfield signed a one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was able to lead the team to the playoffs where they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round but fell short against the Detroit Lions in the Divisional round. In March 2024, The Buccaneers extended his tenure with the team by offering him a $100 million deal for 3 years.
