Ryans started his career as a professional coach in the NFL in 1975 when he was hired by the Baltimore Colts as their assistant for their head coach. In 1976, he joined the Detroit Lions as their assistant special teams coach. He spent the 1978 season as the assistant special teams and defensive assistant coach for the Denver Broncos. In 1979 he joined the New England Patriots as their special teams and defensive assistant coach. He led the team to Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XXV in 1986 and 1990 seasons. He joined the Cleveland Browns in 1991 and was fired from the team in 1996. After his dismissal by the Browns, he again served as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach for the Patriots for the 1996 season.

In 1997, the Jets named Belichick the interim head coach and after their head coach stepped down after the 1999 season, Belichick was introduced as the Patriots, 12th full-time head coach. In 2000, he was hired by the New England Patriots. Belichick has won eight Super Bowl titles as an assistant and head coach. Belichick is by far the most successful coach in Patriots history and has led the Patriots to 17 divisional titles and won the PFWA Executive of the Year in 2021. He was also named the AP NFL Coach of the Year for the 2003, 2007 and 2010 seasons.
