He was originally planned to be an umpire but after the referee Mike Carey announced his retirement, Allen was allowed to handle the referee position. His first match in the NFL as a referee was when the Chicago Bears faced the Buffalo Bills in 2014. When Allen became the referee in the NFL he was 42 years thus making him the youngest referee in the history of the NFL. Since then Allen has officiated many championship games and two Super Bowls, the first one in 2018 between the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams and the other one in 2023 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. He is also the youngest referee in the history of the NFL to officiate a Super Bowl.
