The Bears and the 49ers faced each other in Week 14 of the 2024 NFL season and eyes were on Caleb Williams and Brock Purdy. The Chicago quarterback was the first pick of the 2024 NFL Draft and was expected to lead his team into playoff contention. It has not quite worked out that way. On the other hand, the San Francisco star was a Mr. Irrelevant back in the day but he has already led his team to one Super Bowl appearance.
However, the situation was not so straightforward this year. The 49ers entered into this game with a 5-7 record, two behind the NFC West leaders, Seattle Seahawks. With the Wild Card spots looking tough for any team in that division to get into, San Francisco was looking at topping that group to make it into the postseason. To do so, they needed to get a move on against the Bears.
The Bears entered with a 4-8 record and will probably not make the playoffs this year even though they are not mathematically eliminated. It has seen head coach Matt Eberflus fired, in what became Chicago's first-ever mid-season dismissal in franchise history. Caleb Williams knew that now the focus was on him to show that he could lead the team to a win against a team with a losing record away from home. Here is how his evening panned out.

The first half was a disaster for Caleb Williams and the Bears. By the time they went into the locker room at the break, they had four yards of offense in total. The Chicago rookie threw for 27 yards but was sacked four times for a loss of 30. He ended up with negative three yards after the first two quarters. If D'Andre Swift had not rushed for seven yards, they would have not had positive yardage before halftime.
That meant that they could not get inside the field goal range and failed to score a single point in the first half. Brock Purdy played a clean game on the other side, giving up no turnovers, so the defense could not contribute to that tally either.
Caleb Williams led his team out in the second half trailing 24-0. He showed character to lead his team on a touchdown drive right off the bat and eat up nine minutes in a methodical manner. His pass to Rome Odunze was top class and had Cole Knet reeled in his two-point attempted pass, the visiting team would have been within two scores of their opposition.
But 24-6 was better than not being on the board at all and it felt the momentum was turning as the 49ers punted on the next drive. However, Caleb Williams showed that he is still a rookie and gave up an inexplicable fumble. He seemed to get caught between three minds: passing forward, throwing backward, and tucking it in. It ended up with San Francisco recovering the ball. Brock Purdy engineered another touchdown drive to make it 31-6.
Caleb Williams redeemed himself somewhat with another touchdown pass to Rome Odunze in the fourth quarter to make the score 31-13. But with the Bears' defense failing to put any sort of brakes on the 49ers' offense, the score was soon 38-13. After a Chicago punt on the next drive, the rookie was replaced by Tyson Bagent in the final possession.
