Cameron Sutton is an American football cornerback playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL as of 2024. He began his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers after being selected as the 94th overall pick in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Before joining the Lions as a free agent in 2023, he spent his first six years in Pittsburgh. After not seeing much of the field in his first three years, Sutton got more playing time in 2020 and eventually got the starting reps for the Steelers in 2021. The 2022 season turned out to be a career year for him as he accumulated 3 interceptions and 15 pass deflections (both career-high) that year (via Pro Football Reference). His best year in the pro league earned him a 3-year, $33 million contract from the Lions (via Spotrac). However, after starting all 17 games for Detroit in 2023, Sutton was let go by the franchise in March 2024, due to an arrest warrant issued against him in a case related to domestic abuse.

Revisiting the early years of Sutton’s life, he was born in Jonesboro, Georgia. His football career began at Jonesboro High School in his hometown, where he piled up 1,396 all-purpose yards as a senior.

Cameron Sutton attended the University of Tennessee from 2013 to 2016. During his time at Tennessee, Sutton played on the Tennessee Volunteers football team and made an impact in games even as a freshman. In 2013, he played in 12 games registering 39 tackles, had a team-high 9 pass deflections, a pick 6, 2 fumble recoveries, and a sack (via University of Tennessee Athletics).

In his sophomore year in 2014, he played and started in 13 games in which he had 37 tackles of which 4 were for loss. Once again he led the team in passes defended with 16. He also tied the team with 3 interceptions. He also returned 14 punts for 158 yards with the longest one being a 76-yard return for a touchdown (via University of Tennessee Athletics).

Sutton would continue to have similar numbers in his junior year in 2015, starting all 13 games once again and remaining as the starting punt returner. His 25 returns went for 467 yards and included two touchdowns. On defense, he was again involved in tackles with 28, one interception, two forced fumbles, and 6 pass deflections (via University of Tennessee Athletics).

He finished his senior year of college by graduating with a degree in Communication Studies and on the field he started 7 games that year. Continued to be the team’s main punt returner and finished his four-year college career with the highest passes defended in Volunteers history with 37 (via University of Tennessee Athletics).
