Knowing that a loss to the Denver Broncos on Thursday would have further diminished their chances of making the playoffs, the Los Angeles Chargers pulled off a stunning 34-27 comeback win at SoFi Stadium to preserve their prospects.
The victory was significant because it ended the Broncos' four-game winning streak, put the Chargers in sixth place in the AFC playoff race and also stamped their head-to-head tiebreaker advantage over their divisional rivals, increasing their chances of making the postseason.
With just two games left in the regular season, we'll examine how the Bolts can guarantee a postseason berth.

Chargers' playoff scenarios with two games remaining
The AFC playoff situation has changed for the Los Angeles Chargers as a result of their victory over the Denver Broncos last week. They are in complete control of their own fate, especially given that they have an advantageous tiebreaker scenario with their 9-6 record.
The Chargers could have clinched a playoff spot in Week 16 if other results had gone their way, but they didn't because both the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins recorded wins.
Regardless of the outcome of other Week 17 games, a victory over the New England Patriots (3-12) this week will effectively secure the Chargers a postseason spot.
The Bolts would also be assured of finishing no lower than sixth in the AFC if they win each of their next two games. This might help them avoid the Buffalo Bills (12-3), who are set to finish second in the conference, in the wild-card round.
Los Angeles would have no explanation for failing to perform well in its final two games against the Patriots and the Las Vegas Raiders, two clubs with a 3-12 record and already out of the running for the postseason.
Los Angeles Chargers' playoff scenario explored
According to Sportskeeda's Playoff Predictor tool, the Los Angeles Chargers will win both of their remaining games to end the season with an 11-6 record. Additionally, the team is predicted to finish as the sixth seed in the AFC.
Jim Harbaugh's team is also projected by the prediction tool to take on the No. 3 seeded Baltimore Ravens in January, for the first round of the playoffs.
Given the current AFC wild-card situation, the Chargers will finish no less than sixth seed in the conference if they win their final two games.
