In 2000, he was hired by the NFL as a side judge and was promoted to referee in 2008. In 2010 in a game between the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans, he was chosen as a referee. In Super Bowl XLIX he was the alternate referee which was played at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on February 1, 2015. In Super Bowl LI in Houston On February 5, 2017, which was between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons, Cheffers was chosen to be the referee. Cheffers was also the referee in Super Bowl LV which was his second Super Bowl assignment as a referee. On Feb 12, 2023, he was selected as the referee of Super Bowl LVII.
