The Bears and the 49ers came into this game in Week 14 with each team facing significant challenges. For Chicago, their continuous underachievement over the season meant that Matt Eberflus was fired and Thomas Brown took over the reins. San Francisco, meanwhile, battling multiple injuries and trying to get back to winning ways after two bad losses to the Packers and the Bills.
The Bears were 4-8 coming into this game and are all but out of playoff contention. Despite having Caleb Williams, who was picked first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, and giving him multiple weapons, the NFC North team was sitting at the bottom of their division. Their problem all year has been finding some consistency and they have lost winnable games in a variety of ways: from a Hail Mary to a missed field goal to inexplicable clock management.
The 49ers, on the other hand, have battled injuries to key performers throughout the season. Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason, their top two running backs, were ruled out for the rest of the season coming into Week 14. Trent Williams and Nick Bosa were still missing in their game against Chicago. The home team needed a spark to rekindle their hopes of making the postseason and this is how the action played out.

Bears vs. 49ers game summary
In the history of the NFL, very few first halves would have been as lopsided as this one. After scoring 20 combined points in their last two games, the 49ers were back at home and looked like they meant business.
The very first possession yielded San Francisco's first touchdown. It looked as if Brock Purdy was personally affronted that his position was still being scrutinized and threw some terrific passes to engineer the drive. Jauan Jennings caught one of those dimes and took it into the endzone for a 7-0 49ers lead.
The two teams then exchanged three consecutive punts before San Francisco scored another touchdown before the end of the first quarter. Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason might have been missing but Isaac Guerendo took over the running back spot and had a huge reception to set up a first-and-goal. The running back then took the ball himself past the goalline to make it 14-0 for the home team.
Chicago punted on their next drive and the 49ers got the ball back and scored another touchdown. Jauan Jennings scored his second for the game in the first half and gave his team a 21-0 lead. Yet another punt by the Bears culminated in a scoring possession by the home team that yielded a field goal to make the halftime score 24-0.
Caleb Williams passed for 27 yards and was sacked for 30 yards. D'Andre Swift had seven yards on the ground for a net of 4 yards in the first half for the Bears. The 49ers had more than 300, making it an absolute battering.
The visiting team came back out in the second half with a renewed sense of purpose. They eclipsed their entire first-half performance with a touchdown. Caleb Williams threw a pass deep into the corner of the endzone and Rome Odunze made a fabulous catch to make the score 24-6 after a two-point conversion attempt failed.
After forcing the 49ers to punt in the next drive, the Bears could feel the momentum shifting. However, a terrible fumble by the Chicago quarterback handed the initiative back to the opposition. He was under no pressure and San Francisco recovered the ball to score another touchdown in their next offensive possession to go ahead 31-6 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Isaac Guerendo had his second of the evening.
Caleb Williams redeemed himself somewhat on the next drive as he connected with Rome Odunze for the second time in the evening to cut the arrears to 31-13. However, with the Bears failing to stop the San Francisco offense from picking up yards at will, it was soon 38-13 as Patrick Taylor Jr. got his first touchdown as a 49er.
After Chicago had to punt on their next drive, the home team brought out Brandon Allen to put the game on ice. He inadvertently showed why Brock Purdy is the starter as he threw the first interception of the game just before the two-minute warning. But the Bears knew too that they had to live to fight another day and brought on Tyson Bagent to see out the loss. The NFC North team is now 4-9 in 2024 and the 49ers rose to 6-7 and keep their playoff hopes alive.
